Artist Spotlight #13

Submitted by Piner 03/28/06 4:49 AM GMT

Our regularly scheduled Artist Spotlight will not be seen tonight so we can bring you the following Special Presentation "Caedes, Praetor Maximus and the Building of the Artists' Republic ".

I think that many people might find it odd that the organizer of a relatively large community of artists such as caedes.net would not consider himself an artist. Indeed, I have dabbled in photography, graphic design, fractals, and CGI, however I certainly do not consider any of my work to be worthy of the title “Art” (with a big “A”). Instead, most of the artistic work that I've created served as an introduction and familiarization with the styles and tools in the various genres. I first started making fractals with my first graphic calculator in high school (though I was thinking about it from a mathematical perspective) and then color fractals with my first PC and Fractint. Then I worked with various CAD programs to create CG images like “Joe D's Trumpet” and “Dice Infestation.” My interest in CAD was mainly due to whatever scientific drafting I may need to do in the future. Finally, my interest in graphic design is mainly a consequence of the basic graphic nature of the web. Any website, no matter how simple, need some graphic design, so when programming and creating websites it is almost impossible to avoid doing some graphic design work (unless of course you don't mind paying someone else to do it).

I do believe that I have a talent for taking a piece of artwork and synthesizing the root characteristics, forms, and techniques used in its creation. It is this talent that I believe allows me to successfully imitate various artistic styles as well as to identify and critique artwork.

This isn't to say that I think whatever artistic talent I may have is important to caedes.net in any way. The creation of an online community like caedes.net requires 10% interest in the subject (not talent) and 90% technical knowledge related to the operation of websites (some knowledge of group psychology doesn't hurt either). Pretty much all of this I've learned along the way. The “Desktop Wallpaper Index” first started when I put my collection of 200 wallpapers online and made a small script which automatically generated a set of web pages for the images. At first I started adding images as I found them or they were sent to me, however this quickly got too time consuming and I was “forced” to allow people to upload their own images. From that point on, the site has gradually evolved to what we have today.

I think that the strongest aspect of caedes.net is the community atmosphere. I have always made it a point to solicit and consider the member's opinions regarding changes and additions to the site. I like to give everyone a chance to make a difference and to decide how involved in the site's operation they want to be. In this way, each member can make the site his own and thus is more invested in a positive outcome and progress of the community as a whole. I'd say this is the main advantage that we have over other websites and the reason for our success thus far.

Development of the site has slowed a bit in the last year while I have been finishing a masters degree in Physics. Soon I will graduate and will be looking for a job. So I guess I will have more or less time for the website depending on how that goes. However, I consider the work that I do on the site a mainly recreational pursuit and therefore always find time for it in my schedule.

In the future, I look forward to expanding my artistic dabblings into more traditional media such as painting and photography. On a slightly different note, I have for quite a while been active in musical performance: first with piano and later trumpet. Currently, I'm making semi-monthly attempts to learn guitar.

Finally I'd like to thank all the Consuls, Praetori, Aediles, artists, and members for the great work and dedication they show every day. Without the community, caedes.net would not exist, and we'd all be over at DeviantArt making Anime by now. =)

Thanks from an old retired guy, for the ability to stay in touch with artists around the world, and a reason to stay focused on the beauty of nature, and i might add, the desire to crawl out of bed just one more day. The regulars that hang out here most every day, are the most warm and considerate people that i have had the pleasure to meet and converse with. Your site helps people in more ways then you can ever imagine. Rock on dude. Dwight.

As a newcomer to Caedes I also would like to say a big thank you for this wonderful site. There is a very nice atmosphere here and it is a pleasure to view and participate in. Inspiration to improve is always here from so many talented participants, and to receive recognition and constructive criticism is a great motivation.
Thank you Caedes, and every one else who does such good work around here.

Well, being and extrovert living an introvert lifestyle, Caedes has provided me with hours of enjoyment. Having accidentally tripped onto the site back in October it’s been like magic ever since. I use to be a loner on the web: surfing, gaming, etc. I enjoyed changing my desktop wallpaper using those abstract doohickeys that I now know are called fractals, well one day I did a Google search for wallpapers and came across Caedes. Not only seeing all the great ones on Caedes but getting into it and making my own now has been a pleasure and I haven’t looked back. I also got my first digital camera as well back in October and can’t wait till a little better weather to get outdoors and start shooting different subjects…I think people, myself included, got a little too much of Charlie & Gabriel. Not to worry, they’re doing purrrfect and will still continue to be posted from time to time. I see so many marvelous pictures and want to learn and be able to take such pics as so many on Caedes do. Anywho…

A hugh THANKS to *caedes, all the mods, my friends and the entire Caedes community for opening my eyes and heart and for coloring my world in ways I never dreamt possible.

Sincerely,
Randy

The format of this site is a big part of what makes it so popular, IMHO. It's very "user friendly" and it's clear that you've worked hard to make it that way. It's easy to find and download images, and I like the fact that people have the option of downloading different sized images. I also like the image quality . . . your formula for compressing images and still retaining high quality is a great part of the Caedes experience. It's great to have a on-line community to share art with and, despite some issues I've raise regarding changes in the system for rating images, I'm grateful for the opportunity you've afforded members to share their work. Thanks, Caedes! Wen

You've done a wonderful job, Caedes. Your site has enriched my life the past couple of years. Like others have said before, my only regret is that I don't have as much time as I'd like to spend looking through. In terms of a suggestion, the only annoying thing I ever run into is having to wait for a minute to comment on the next image (flood control) - especially when I have only a precious few minutes to spend at any one time. I enjoy the community aspect of Caedes much more than other sites I've dabbled with (DeviantArt, for example). The aspect I appreciate most about the site is the code of conduct - it's safe for my kids to participate too. Thank you. And keep up the great work.

By the way, I just recommended the Caedes.net site to Utah teachers in the UCET (Utah Coalition for Educational Technology) newsletter for April 2006. If you're interested in having a look, the site is http://www.ucet.org

The newsletter (PDF) is linked in the left column of the main page.

Several years ago I was carousing my way around the Internet and I stumbled across this site. I was looking for a place where I could share my vision of the world around me and everywhere else I found was all about making money. While I'm not against that, my photography is about sharing. Thanks to you Geri for giving me a place to share that vision, make new friends and see the work of MANY fine artists. I think that I have found more here than any other site and I know we all share a debt to you for providing us with this wonderful forum.
Congratulations on completing your Masters and I know you will have no problem finding a job.

I was introduced to caedes.net by a friend. He was at our house, telling hubby & me that this was the most awesome site ! I was pretty computer illiterate back then, didn't even have a camera, but hubby helped me to sign-up & that was Valentine's Day of 2004. It has been my only love ever since. I have not found the need to be 'unfaithful' & post anywhere else ...lol
Your dedication to the preservation of this site is amazing Geri. You are to be commended for the time, the effort, the thought and the sanity that you provide to all of us on a consistent, daily basis.
I have seen many artists come, and many artists go, but one thing has been constant and that is this that this site has a positive emotional impact on the entire community. We are honest here , we are open to suggestions & willing to change if necessary. These are excellent qualities to have in the real world as well as the cyber world. The nice words that we read on the images we post may be the only positive stroke that a member may get that day. Admittedly I have grown emotionally while being a member of this community....so, BIG congrats on the Masters, may your job seeking be successful and............
thank you so much for all you do........

Caedes Site has given me back something I thought was lost forever.
I have kienbock's disease...a rare disease, not fatal, not genetic, just necromosis/death of the lunate bones in both hands. I am right handed, and this is the first hand to deteriorate for me, and it had the lunate extracted, then my hand fused to the wrist. My hobby of sketching and writing poetry came to a crashing end.
Finding this site, with the people here who have been kind and caring enough to teach me a new way to express my poetry and art thru photography, fractals and photo manipulation, has given it all back to me! Then there is the bigger bonus of meeting true friends, from all over the world, in every ethnic group or religions, and I love them all...
In addition, seeing the new artists come in and being able to encourage them and watch them grow is an awesome feeling!
Thank you Caedes {real name with-held:)....sincerely, and best wishes in all you do, because you truly deserve the best! Terri

One day, a long, long time from now, when you are juggling a million high profile issues, trading the stockmarket, or preparing a speech for the UN, you will think back to caedes.net and the impact you had around the world because you had built something that was based on what you enjoyed doing, and you did it well. You may realise that such "grassroots" impact is rarely achieved from within in most organisations.
Very few of us have such an achievement to look back on later. You will always benefit from what you have built here, because you can always revisit this (virtual) place and (real) time in your mind. The nice bonus is that you have given a similar pleasure to so many others too.
I am glad I discovered caedes.net.
Thankyou.

I found this site just over a year ago, looking for wallpapers, just like many others. I'd download the occassional wallpaper or make the infrequent comment, nothing major, until last fall. I got more curious about things & decided to become more involved. Since then I've discovered the homey small town atmosphere of this site is so attractive & is, in my opinion, why people joke about their Caedes addiction.Which, I have ! I've made many friends here from all over the world, & met many people who give help at the drop of a hat. The sense of community here is both welcome & welcoming.
So thank you very much Caedes, for putting all this together & thus, bringing all of us together.

I don't remember how I actually found myself here, it was either a google or a link from somewhere else during one of my yearly searches for new desktop art. When the comment request feature was added, i started participating in some of the threads.

That person right up there ^^^^^^ above me made a comment which shoved me off the edge of a cliff and has helped me explore my artistic side as a fulfilling thing rather than just a career. The off-topic threads have given me great challenges, useful & interesting info, alot of fun, and a few new friends. 8•)

So much has been covered here by so many nice people, who come from all over the world, have many interests and care about each other and all the new ones that come here are so welcome. It's true that we are one big family in so many ways. I was told about this site by a friend from a Poetry Chatroom that I went to for years.he lives in Brazil....and it all came about because I loved some of the images he posted from caedes. He told me how to get to this site, and I've been hooked ever since. Yes, there have been problems and conflicts, but what in life doesnt have that anyway? That's how we learn, and how we find values, how we grow and appreciate. I've had very caring friends who helped me to "stay" and wait things out...and it paid off royally.
I have to say it amazes me the way you handle things, the outcome of them, because you are always a step ahead of us, you care and want to improve things. The sense of community that is caedes, is not anywhere else. Ffor us to be able to be part of a site like this, well, I think its magnificient.!! We not only find all sorts of solutions for almost any kind of artistic problem we might be having, but we are able to pass the good stuff on. You, mr.caedes, has made all this possible. I'n sure its a good feeling to know inside yourself that you've accomplished something that will never be forgotten by anyone or by you. You will make a mark on this earth, and that's something to cherish. You have a site here that we all can be proud we are part of. And the best thing is that its a site that "belongs" to all of us. A bigtime thanx to you for your hours of determination and effort. The best part is that there are people here who form one large circle of friendship and knowledge..many many thanx to go them and most of all to you............verena

I, like many others came across Caedes upon accident looking only for wallpaper. What impressed me the most was that everyone seemed to have a "community" attitude on this site. I was never interested in photography at all unless it was to snap photos of special occasions or vacations. But, thanks in part to everyone who shares their love on this site I started also to see the beauty of everyday things that we all take for granted and sites of this world that some of us will never be able to visit except through the eyes of these wonderful people here. I have made some truly great friends here and I now see the world through a new set of eyes. Every post is special and unique in its own way. I am so glad for the day that I accidentally found this site because it is just so realaxing at the end of a hard day to view what people want to share. You have done a terrific job on this site and I hope it will be around for a long long time. Thanks you so much Caedes.

Great job with this site! I also stumbled across it a year ago, and I loved the pictures. Then a few months ago, I started posting my images and commenting on other's images. Just wanted to say that this site is definitely the best wallpaper site on the web!

Thanks so much and good luck, Geri

Agree with all of the above! But it's hard to believe there are still those who believe Caedes is a real person! *cue Twilight Zone music*

Annie and I invite you to visit our website. Photography is not a trade - it is an art. It is more that an art. It is a solar phenomenon, where the artist collaborates with the sun. deLamartine 1855

this is 1 of the best website on the internet, or at least the ones I visited so far. The first time I came here I thought it was just a website that hosted amazing wallpapers, but I found out by reading comments that the artists here were real and dedicated artists who really deeply cared about the development of other fellow artists, to build each other up. That's what's special about this site, I guess others have already pointed it out. the community that's on this site is rare on the www(i have never come across such), and precious to all the members. So, great job making this wonderful website, congratulations on finishing school and may you enjoy learning guitar!

we are building a city, with a Tower reaches to the heavens...Babel??.. no, it's a Tower built with unity in Christ, it's a Tower for the Glory of God to shine, for we are one Heart and have one language in Him who died for us and rose again in power...

I too appreciate this site. . and all these comments above reflect a great community. . I have dabbled with photogaphy for many years but since joining Caedes, it has become one of my primary passions, because of the sharing aspect. Rare is a day that I don't visit the community to see what is new in the world of peoples creativity.
So my thanks is for you in creation of this site and also to everyboy who actively participates in this community.

Hey i think ill drop in my 2 cents too...not litterally. Great webpage, gives me something to do, even though i may not be that great at making stuff. Like i said im not very good at making "art" but yes, it is a hobby of mine.

I found this side by looking of bgrounds for a webpage and stumbled on this site, I saw the cool images by others and thought i should try.

Did i say thanks a lot?

Why did you pick Caedes as the name for the website? It has been successful and become fairly known, but the meaning just doesn't seem to fit with the intent. A very belated congratulations for your being chosen AOTM. I joined the site after it was posted and just now stumbled across it.
