TPOTY 2006 Competition

Submitted by philcUK 04/09/06 8:27 PM GMT

The International Travel Photographer of the Year 2006 Competition is open as of this weekend for entries and runs through until September. It is open to all comers, pros and amateurs alike and has many different categories available for entries including junior competitions. There are many excellent photographs here on the site already that would do well in this contest so perhaps this more than any of the others would be the most fitting contest for Caedes members to enter.

The range of prizes is very extensive and includes: An adventure for two to Mozambique and South Africa with G.A.P Adventures, Hewlett Packard Designjet 90gp large format printer, Adobe CS2 Premium Collection software, Thailand photo trips, Hasselblad H2 camera kit, Sri Lanka photo trips, Fujifilm S3 Pro digital camera and lens, Indian photo trip, Mamiya 7ii rangefinder camera plus choice of two lenses, Brazilian or Belize photo trip with Land Rover, a custom-built website from Iridous, a 7 day trip to the Islands of the Bahamas and runner up prizes including Fujifilm 4GB memory cards, Lee filters, photography reference books and Wacom tablets. You can find out more information here.

Oooooh...fun! Any travel grant money being offered for those who would require it to go abroad? :-P

As you will see from the contest info you don’t even have to necessarily leave your own town to enter....

So that would be a no on the grant money i'm guessing :-)

It says, "In fact anything you photograph from the moment you pack your bags to the moment you get back again is travel photography." Does that mean that you have to be going somewhere? For example, I drove downtown, which is a good half an hour from my house, with a bag packed solely with photo gear. Would pictures taken that day in that area count?

Ok - so there are lots of different categories to enter and for those of you not planning on leaving your own city then perhaps these would suit you best:

STREETLIFE Portfolio
Sponsors: Guerba, Hasselblad, Adobe

It’s urban; it’s anywhere where people live whether that’s a big city or a small village. Think people, think lifestyle, think culture, think architecture, think urban environment. Put them in a travel context and put together a portfolio of four images. We don’t want just architecture or just lifestyle or just people. We want to see a portfolio that includes the place combined with the people that make it.

Winner's Prize: Thailand with Guerba; A Hasselblad H2 kit; Adobe Photoshop CS2 software

FESTIVAL Single Image Category
Sponsors: Islands of the Bahamas, Plastic Sandwich, Adobe

Colour, movement, culture, eccentricity, history, sounds and smells. Capture a festival and tell us about it. Sounds easy? Try doing that in one image!

Winner's Prize: A trip to the beautiful Islands of the Bahamas, Plastic Sandwich leather print portfolio book, Adobe Photoshop CS2 software.

NORTH OF 30 DEGREES Portfolio
Sponsors: The Independent Traveller, Mamiya, Adobe

You’ll need your atlas for this one. After three years of too many Buddhist monks, Maasai warriors and South American market traders this category is to give the judges a break! It’s effectively an open travel theme so you choose but you can only enter images taken in places north of 30 degrees latitude for this portfolio.

Winner's Prize: India with The Independent Traveller; a Mamiya 7ii rangefinder camera plus choice of two lenses; Adobe Photoshop CS2 software.

The other categories apply to location landscapes, peoples and wildlife. There is plenty of information on the site pertaining to the rules as well as some invaluable guidelines on preparing your entries to avoid falling at the first fence.

There would be no way for the contest holder to confirm that you were travelling when you took the photo. I imagine you could submit pretty much any photo you wished.

that about sums it up - as long as the photos in your portfolio conform with what they are expecting in that category then that should be fine

So you can enter before September? I'm just wondering because I'm going to Portugal in the summer and was hoping to get some great shots with a new camera...
