Contest: Whole Lot of Nothing

Submitted by animaniactoo 03/09/08 12:31 AM GMT

For this contest, your challenge is to explore the category of Oxymorons in a visual manner. Your finished image should work as a desktop image, and the oxymoron should be clearly identifiable without additional explanation. Photomanipulations and Digital art submissions are welcome, but must appear as a complete image, not a simple representation of 2 contradictory images sitting next to each other. Fractalists may have a hard time with this challenge, but please feel free to enter, and rest assured that my next contest will be specifically targeted for Fractalists. Remember to have fun and enjoy yourselves during this contest. Winners will be selected in the following categories:

Best Overall interpretation
Most Humorous interpretation
Best Serious interpretation

Entries are limited to 2 per person and can include 1 additional collaborative image. Contest closes April 13th @ 2400 est (nyc time for our international members), so be sure to have your entries "postmarked" before then. Ready? Get set… *Hits the starting gun with a deafening blast".

Alright. So this is prbly totally n00bish of me- but I don't know how these contests work, never done one, and I tried to find info on caedes about the 411, but couldn't. So Cat would you mind filling me in (or anyone)?

I get that we get 2 per person, by April 13th, 24 est... and postmarked means it's officially in the gallery right? But how do we submit our photos?

Thanks :]

An oxymoron (plural oxymorons or, more rarely, oxymora) is a figure of speech that combines two normally contradictory terms. Oxymoron is a loanword from Greek oxy ("sharp") and moros ("dull"). Thus the word oxymoron is itself an oxymoron.

Oxymorons are a proper subset of the expressions called contradictions in terms. What distinguishes oxymorons from other paradoxes and contradictions is that they are used intentionally, for rhetorical effect, and the contradiction is only apparent, as the combination of terms provides a novel expression of some concept, such as "cruel to be kind".

The most common form of oxymoron involves an adjective-noun combination. For example, the following line from Tennyson's Idylls of the King contains two oxymorons:

"And faith unfaithful kept him falsely true"

there that clears that up courtesy of the dubious resource that is, wikipedia.

or more simply......

a figure of speech by which a locution produces an incongruous, seemingly self-contradictory effect, as in “cruel kindness” or “to make haste slowly.”

You were not asked to vote because you had images entered in that contest. There were judges selected and they did vote. If you have a question about how a previous contest was run and or judged, please at least start by asking your questions by pm'ing the person in charge of that contest.

We now return you to your current contest already in progress.

Back to your currently running contest…

It appears people are struggling with this concept more than I thought they would, so I'd like to toss out a concept that I hope will help (even thought I was trying not to give this one away in the hopes someone would think of it and use it).

Pierre's link above to his image of a "don't go through here" sign in the middle of a desert is a great one, here's my example - imagine an image of a homeless man (or woman) standing or sitting in front of a high-end clothing store or restaurant. It is the idea of two things that seem opposite, but when shown together make a statement.

That is so much more help! Thanks :] Because for a while I thought it was only limited to real oxymorons like: jumbo shrimp, pretty ugly, sophomore, etc. And I was like... well I guess I'll have to be super creative and use my friend photoshop a lot to do something with those. But what you're saying is more of a paradox than a oxymoron. Which is a lot easier!

That helps :]

0∈ [?]
&purmusic
03/22/08 4:04 AM GMT
If I may Sabine ... and kind of, sort of ... quoting from Cat's words above ... the image should be strong enough to stand on it's own.

That said, some oxymorons do not translate as easily by just imagery alone. So, including some additional information ... such as a title or description (accompanying narrative to the image) will help of course.

I do think and it is fair to say, that if ... if, you can capture an image that speaks on it's own without some additional words ... that image would be a stronger contender.
