Contest Announcement: "Negative Space"

Submitted by purmusic 01/27/09 6:16 AM GMT

As an artist, it’s easy to concentrate on the main focal subjects of our work — so easy in fact, that we can readily forget about a part of our work equally important: The Negative Space. Negative Space is defined as the space between and around an object. Your contest entry should Highlight the use of Negative Space in order to accentuate your subject. There is no limitation on the subject or genre of art, each member can submit one image to the "Contests->Negative Space" gallery. The four artists that show the most effective use of Negative Space in their entries will receive 3-month memberships in the Caedes Cadre and honorary titles. As always, only original images that have not been previously uploaded to caedes.net will be considered. Deadline for submissions is March 16th, 2009 at 11:59 PM GMT.

@ .aboogie ... to address your question about silhouettes.

I think silhouettes would count as long as it is the main focal point or subject within a positive space.

I believe a silhouette is not the same thing as 'negative space' in some cases. I may be wrong.

Here are a couple of links re: Negative Space

Enhancing Your Art With Negative Space

Composition / Negative Space

The first link goes into a little detail about using 'silhouettes' in relationship to negative space ... more precisely positive space. There are also some examples shown.

Hope this helps.

Best of luck to everyone. :-)

Those images misplaced have been moved. (Thanks, Pierre.)

Now then, seems as some are struggling with the concept. Sherre; aka danika has provided a couple of excellent links (/\ six posts back /\) that explains the concept/theme.

Simplified, it is this ... "Negative space helps define a subject, and brings balance to a composition."

Getting back to the basics, in short.

Got it now?

I'd like to add something at this juncture ... an informational post of sorts for those not familiar with how the site contests are conducted.

Re: Voting and scoring of contest entries/submissions.

Your images will receive a C-Index rating ... as they will, in fact, go through the normal cycle of an image on the site here.

(Consideration is being given to exempt contest imagery from the 'voting booth' to avoid the confusion in the past, and future ... as a result of an image being scored twice, let's say. Not in place as of this writing, and not likely for this contest, however.)

The voting that takes place after the closing date for submissions has passed ... is the deciding vote. Not the C-Index that your image receives in the interim, prior to this contest voting stage.

Brief synopsis:

Contest closes.

Voting invitations are then extended to members, as this is indeed a peer groups' decision in the final analysis. Depending on the speed in which these are returned and in sufficient numbers (statistically speaking) ... the winning imagery is decided and published on a contest finals' winning gallery page. Preceded by a followup news announcement towards that end.

I am enjoying watching the entries as they come in. My confidence in the membership in producing fine quality submissions was not misplaced. Well done to all who have participated thus far.

And again, please pass the word along that the contest is up and running to whoever. I've noticed some of you have added words to that effect, in some of your commentaries placed on images. And I thank you for these assists.

Good luck to all ... and enjoy the creative challenge at hand. :o)

Summary of the contest rules:

i) One entry per member.

Although, 'switching out' of entries/submissions is allowed. You may replace an entry by simply choosing 'edit' under your image's accompanying narrative ... move the one you are replacing to the appropriate gallery ... submit new entry. Govern this activity yourselves.

ii) No collaborative efforts for this contest.

iii) Members should upload or submit their image to the "new images->Contests->Current Contest gallery" (Found through the galleries drop down menu on the upload page(s) ).

And finally;

Got jiggy with the decisions at hand, got my voting freak on ... and now?

I am looking, once more, at the contest galleries in their entirety.

Take a bow everyone. And a curtain call or two. Nicely ... done. :o)

My own contest voting workflow entailed opening all of the contest gallery pages, one by one (twelve to a page) ... side by side ... and then, choosing those images that stood out from their respective peer group's page.

Then ... again, side by side ... bearing in mind these words; "Your contest entry should Highlight the use of Negative Space in order to accentuate your subject" ... took some time to, literally, note the visual impact of each of those that remained in the running, if you will.

Took me about ... hmmm, an hour plus. Time well spent, as I echo the above words that this contest did indeed bring out some wonderful creativity from the membership. :o)

Looking forward to the reveal of the winners, all that is needed at this juncture is a goodly amount (statistically speaking) of votes to come in. So ...

"Soon" is what my parents used to say to us 3 bored boys on the back seat of the car, when there was hours to go before we arrived at a holiday destination.

I'm just waiting to read .."the results are just around the next bend...."

Then I'll know that there's still a month of Sundays to go.

Anyone up for a game of I-spy while we wait?

I spy, with my little eye....something beginning with ... B

Sorry - both wrong.

As Les was saying "takes back Lauren's 'unofficial officially good good prize' ... hands her a mop and bucket instead ...Now ... make sure you get into the corners. Particularly, the Offtopics... "

The B was for Broomstick - I was thinking about picking it up, so I could sweep around the bits Lauren missed.

{whiney voice used to annoy parents} "Are we nearly there yet?"

C..yanide?

C..index?

(I'm up for a debate as to which has a higher toxicity :P)

Some sort of idea as to when the results will be known/reported might be a good thing.. :o)

Please, even if you don't visit my gallery, check out my "Faves".I've left them intact since day "1", and would like it if every image there got the attention they deserved.

I was awarded the highly unimpressive C-index of 9 the other day, that puts me in negative space; maybe I should offer that shot up for consideration to the current contest?

Gotcha beat... I once got a 1... which is how many days Les has left to live if we don't in the intervening time get the contest results...
