A call for moderators

Submitted by caedes 12/06/02 5:53 AM GMT

The next upgrade of the site will let certain members serve as User gallery moderators. User gallery images will have to be approved by one of these moderators before it appears in the gallery.

If you are interested in doing this just let me know. I already have certain (extremely active) members in mind for the job. ;-)

After this a call for moderators plan goes into effect are we going to have to email our wallpapers to them and have them post them on your site? Or is it going to remain the same but if they dont like them they will remove it?

It will be the exact same (with improvements). You will upload an image and it won't appear in the gallery until a moderator has says it isn't porn.

Soon this month. The semester is almost over and I'll have time at home to finish what little programming is left.

Is this site taking to much of your time? I hope you dont dump it cause it's kinda fun posting wallpapers and seeing if people like them.

Yes, it probably is taking up too much time. However that's only because I let it. I think I might transistion the site so that it can be mainly run by the users.

That sounds like a great idea, I hope that the site keeps the simple straight forward design cause it seems to work great with no gliches.

I totally agree, the site design is awesome and user friendly, but how would it be controled by members? Like, in what way?

If there's anything I can do, feel free to ask. This sounds like a great idea, I hope everything transitions smoothly.

I was always afraid that kind of thing would happen, since uploading was unmoderated. In fact when I first saw the user gallery I thought to myself 'it'll probably be awhile before it's put up, because it'll have to be approved or something.' So this is definately a good idea to do this.

This all sounds great as long as one of the moderators don't decide that he or she is an art critic or uses their new found power to censor pics from a person that they dislike. Now this may sound ridiculous but I have seen things of this nature happen on countless message board and other user moderated sites. Normally I don't participate in this type of discussion but I like to post wallpapers here and I would really hate for this site to become so restrictive on what is allowed to be posted.I realize that the stuff that I post isn't that great but I think people do like to look at it. Personally I think that if a image is posted it should at least be allowed to see if it will move up the rankings then if it don't for some reason or remains stagnate then it should be removed.I also understand the bandwidth issue but I think that word of mouth is eating up your bandwidth more so then the content. I also feel if you have a good site people will come and eat up your bandwidth regardless. I also feel if you start to limit what is allowed to be posted I think eventually people will quit trying to post then you will run out of the variety that makes this site so great, but I guess that would solve your the bandwidth issue. It just sounds to me like it's another hobby gone haywire, and like all other free sites it either has to stop growing or (and I cringe when I say this) start turning a profit.

Those are all good points, however I can assure you that censorship will not be a problem. I'm going to instruct moderators to approve everything that isn't illegal or obscene. Bandwidth really isn't a problem because I have a dedicated server with 600 Gigs of bandwidth a month (right now we're using about 80Gigs a month).

That is truely a relief because I was under the impression that you where getting ready to disallow certain content, and the wallpaper that I like to post don't fall into the photography category. When I read the news you posted below this sting it sounded like you where trying to get away from the absract wallpapers in the user galleries.

Effectively, the idea to designate moderators is good. But, on which criterias they will have to decide that the wallpaper is publishable? What means 'illegal' and what means 'obscene'?
Is it illegal to show a photo of a face? Is it obscene to show a naked person?
Personally, I don't have the answers...

I'll be giving the moderator instruction as soon as I figure out what those are going to be. :-)

I would imagine that showing a naked person would definately be considered obscene. I don't know that showing someone's face would be considered illegal, but I think that taking someone's copyrighted work and passing it off as one's own would be illegal.

However of course it is ulitmately up to Caedes' descretion, since it is his site.

I believe the point of having moderators to begin with is so Caedes doesnt have spend time monitoring what is posted and what is not posted. If after he starts this and he still has to monitor the uploads what is the since in having them to begin with? Besides you should be able to look at the content thats already here and be able to see what is allowed or disallowed.

I have a general idea for the moderators but no list. It's really not that big of a deal. I already moderate all the posts. In the future we can have people do that as well, but it's not needed right now. We'll just start with the image and see how it goes.

I would love to be a moderator, i really enjoy looking at background pictures. Fractals are my favorite, and i enjoy perfection; however, the average person cannot achieve perfection and i know this. reasonable, yet not easy, is the way i will affirmate my pictures

Caedes, I appreciate your concern for upholding moral values. I think you've come this far by carefully plotting your decisions and I feel you will continue to do so. However, I would ask that something be done to eliminate the obscene profanity in some of the viewers comments. Thank you very much and if anyone agrees would you please let me know I'm not alone!!
