Perl programmers wanted

Submitted by caedes 04/09/03 5:36 AM GMT

Have too much time on your hands? Looking for a job with few benifits and even less pay? Then this might just be the job for you!! I'm having trouble getting all the programming done for the site in a timeframe that I think is acceptable. I wonder if there are any regular users out there who have the talent and interest to maintain the backend scripts for caedes.net? This position could eventually lead to full administration of the site. Read on for details:

The site is totally written in Perl with a MySQL database. The job would involve maintaining and creating the scripts which run the custom caedes.net features (like the galleries). This would require you to learn about the Project Zephir API. This is pretty high level programming (if I do say so myself), so you'll really have to know your way around Perl and SQL.

Eventually this job could lead to full administration of the site (hey I can't do this forever) =). Anyone that's interested can post here or send me a private message/email. Thanks.

Ryanr: How about a 20% pay increase from what I make? So $0.00 * 1.2 = $0.00 =)

I'll help! I don't have a lot of time, but if you gave me a small project I could get some stuff done. You've got my email address, so let me know if you want my help.

I didn't even think to ask if you knew Perl. =) I'll think about a small module that you can do. Maybe I'll set up a CVS on the server?

First of all it's "Perl" and yes, you'd have to know it really well. Thanks for the offer though. =)

Well, Perl and MySQL are my professional expertiese. Furthermore, I enjoy caedes.net and would love to help.

That being said, I guess I have two questions:
1. What needs to be done/changed/altered/fixed?
2. Why must it stay within Project Zephir? I would much prefer to rewrite the Perl, keep the HTML and the MySQL, and simply rewrite the Perl such that I can guarantee that anything is possible, as opposed to working within Zephir, adn being restricted by someone else's code.

1. When people have good ideas about site features then they need to be implemented in a shorter time than they are currently. There is a wanted feature discussion on the board right now.

2. Project Zephir (PZ) is a Content Management System that I wrote specifically for community site like caedes.net. You have to understand that there are two groups of code that run the site. The first is the PZ code that does all the background stuff like connect to the database, log people into the site, post messages, those types of general things. This is about 90% of the code. The second code group is the stuff that is specifically written for caedes.net: the gallery and upload scripts for example. The reason you don't really want to rewrite ALL the code (the stuff that PZ does) is that PZ works really well for what it is supposed to do, and as soon as you see the API you realize that it doesn't restrict your freedom at all.

Do you have some code that I could take a look at?

Oops, kind of forgot to come back and continue the conversation.

If it's still of concern, give me a buzz at caedes@HolophrasticEnterprises.com or 416-230-1410
