Debug the new site (UPDATED)

Submitted by caedes 06/21/03 11:44 PM GMT

UPDATE: I've uploaded release candidate #2 for your ridicule. Cookies for anyone who finds an error other than the 'Author gallery thumbnail alt text is screwy' and the 'cookie variables for gallery sorting are uninitiallized' bugs. =) I also need to know what to change 'goodness' to! Thanks a bunch.

The developement website for caedes.net is now online and you can help in debugging it for us. Just go to http://dev.caedes.net/, and use the site as you normally would. I copied over the users database, so you should be able to log in without making a new account as long as you haven't changed your password recently. One think to note is that the site will log you out whenever you switch between the dev site and the 'real' site. Let's see how many bugs we can find in a week and then I'll upgrade the real site.

One thing I'm going to add is the ability to specify your own gallery name on the upload script. Of course the mods will have to approve it afterward.

Also, the 'Featured Images' header won't show up untill enough images are uploaded.

And the News script breaks if you try to submit an article without being logged in.

So are you saying that I can destroy the news script if I submit and article without being logged in? =)

And don't forget to check the discussion board in the dev site I think that is where most of the bug discussing will be going on in...

Sort by "goodness"? Oh, my goodness -- no!

It won't hurt anything, you'll just get an error instead of an error message.

We can change 'goodness' to anything you like. ideas?

I kinda like "Quality," but like the term "Goodness," it expresses more fact than opinion. This stated, I think in grading the works of others, one should refrain from expressing anything but opinion; I think terms such as Status, Rating, or Score are better suited.

I dunno, goodness seems fine, but I'll still think about it. Would "integrity" fit the need?

How about 'squishiness'? hehehhehe... well... ummm... more seriously, if I remember I was possibly thinking maybe perhaps by some remote chance that we could call it the "c-meter" For Caedes Meter...

Or Belovedness.... or Favoritism...

How about a five- or ten-point scale (you've already got it on the new site), and two or three major categories (e.g., originality, technique, aesthetics). You can weigh the categories to your taste.

Sounds like Photo.net's rating system . . . ;-)

Parts of it are, but so what. Any judgmental ratings system will have similar elements. The photo.net system works for that site. I think this site warrants additional elements, and in that regard rather than avoid the photo.net formula, or ignore it altogether, this site can become even better by encompassing its elements and more.

The one thing I like about Photo.net's rating system is that if you rate something very low (1 or 2) or very high (9 or 10) it requires you to leave a comment to explain why you rated the image that way.

I really like the three categories that camerahound mentioned, originality, technique, and aesthetics. those three words come as close to summing up what makes an image good as possible. and there are often images that could get a 10 in one of those and a 1 in another.

For example, in the running water contest there are actually three categories of entries: photographs; photos enhanced in PhotoShop or whatever; and images created totally by computer programs.
