Thinning out the New Images Gallery

Perhaps it would be a good idea to have pictures that recieve a c-index of 50 or less automatically deleted. Or maybe even 60. The point of this would be to keep the pointless pictures off the site. What would everybody here think of that?

The idea has been under consideration among the mods for a while. Nothing concrete has been decided to date.

I would have to state that some images are clearly underrated.

Yes, they are! *cough*someofmineincluded*cough* ;)

The problem is, I think, many people care only about pretty colors or funny shapes blah blah blah. Take what digital artists have labled the "Trendwhore"...curly, swirly, filter whore Photoshop images. These don't take nearly as much skill, imagination or time as some of the works that receive below 60.

Just my opinion...:/

I'm not saying that I don't have a few trendwhores under my belt either :D

Sometimes it's fun to create non sensical work that doesn't suck up a lot of time...

But...I'm trying to move away from those type of images...

Remeber, the mods select images for the permenant galleries based on their own judgement, not the c-index. If an image has merit, it will usuaully be picked up by at least one of them and given it's rightful place in the galleries.

So, there isn't really a c-index and time frame you go by before you delete? I've been trying to save you the trouble, but I was definitely going by the numbers.

The mods don't usually delete the images from the New gallery, they just move the "good" ones to the permenant galleries. I'm not sure if the images are deleted automatically when they reach a certain age, or if caedes deletes them manually when they get to that point; same diff I guess. If you delete your own work manually, it is not actually permanantly deleted from the server, it just goes to a temporary gallery until caedes deletes it permanantly. Hope this helps.

There are certainly some under-rated images, but I think there are far more over-rated. Good job the mods don't use c-index to choose.

I agree. Sometimes it does certainly seem that the author's reputation, etc. can get their images that much further and faster no matter what it is.

definitely does happen, but that's just life. and in a sense, if someone has built a rep. then maybe they deserve it.

I certainly agree as well with your comment Bob and apologize for not adding that to my comment. I did not mean to imply that I didn't realize why this is so. Just that in some cases, another author's work could be quite artistic and worthy but not have near the same c-index. I am excluding myself and my own works humbly. I most certainly have a long way to go and am most willing to delete my own failures.

I think that every photo had to have a detailed list of who vote and how. Then the photo can be deleted from the news photos or don't access in the gallery with a c-50 or less after 5 days but have to stay on every personal user gallery.

I love looking at the new images. I learn from all postings...some things to emulate and other things to avoid. I don't always agree with what others post but that is the way it is with art. Personal taste plays a large role. No suggestions here, just an observation. Thanks to caedes and the mods for doing a great job. Love this site.

I was curious about new images moving to permanent galleries. I noticed some images already in permanent galleries while images that are older (posted earlier) are still in the new images gallery. Is there any method to the madness there or the mods just pick stuff out of the new images gallery every once in a while and move it? That seems like a very tough task without some sort of criterion involving how long the image has been in the new images gallery and/or its c-index. I don't envy the people responsible for doing it :). Certainly seems to be working well to date though~

The only criteria is that we like all new images to stay in the new gallery for about a week, to give everyone a chance to see them. Naturally the very good, usually high rated images are moved first, and after that the other good images are gradually discovered and transferred to the permenant galleries. Those that aren't moved stay in the new gallery for a while (about two months I think) and are eventually deleted.

Because you always have those bad imiages that clog up the new galeries for about 2 months, would it be possible to have 2 classes or something of new galeries, so the truely new imiages could go in one, and the bad ones wouldnt get in the way?

Not really necessary as you can sort them by c-index if you want.

Alternately, you can sort them by date and only view as far as your last visit (that is, 'til something you recognize).

My method: I look at the New Images Gallery by date. I go where the pictures are more than 7 days old. I look at ANY pictures and move trough the permanent galleries with personal criteria. The c-index and the counter of downloads are good tools to help me in my judgement.
Sometimes, I go to the end of the New Images Gallery and I look if we don't forget any good pictures.
Moving pictures trough the permanent galleries takes me ± 1 hour a day...
Sure, as photographer, my opinion is easier to juge photos. But I'm not alone for this work. :-)
