They are rolling all over the floor.
I want to create a faded edge on a picture. I have done it before HERE and HERE so it must be simple. I just can not remember how. Can anyone with their marbles intact point me in the right direction please?
Thanks Sam, but Nah I have Photoshop but have never mastered it, too thick - I use PSP but can not find anything in there that would do this. I feel such a drongo :(
If you just want a solid color around the image then there are many ways you could do it. As Samatar suggests: you can apply an inner "glow" that is black to the whole image. Then just use the airbrush to touch it up a bit.
Open a photo.
Choose the selection tool from the toolbar.
In the tool options, set the selection type to Ellipse.
Drag a selection around the area of the photo you want to keep.
Go to Masks > New > Show Selection.
Go to Selections > Select None.
Go to Masks > Edit.
Go to Effects > Blur > Gaussian Blur...
Click the Proof button so you can see the effect in real time and adjust the radius slider until you are happy with the fade amount, then click OK.
Exit mask edit mode by going to Masks > Edit again.
Create a layer under the photo and fill it with the desired background or pattern.
I can get a solid shape in PSP under Image/Photo Frame where there is a selection of shapes but can not do the faded- out look. As I said, there must have been a simple way of doing it otherwise I would not have been able to lol.
I hate to admit it, but I have not mastered layers yet - so I did not do it that way.
Thanks both for your help.
I.30 am here so I will get back on to it tomorrow. :)
+mayne - I think those instructions must be for Photoshop? They dont seem right for PSP, but thanks anyway, perhaps I will have to wheel the PS out.
*caedes - I know, I know, but I have never really needed layers :)
Whatever I used on my other pics must have been a quick click thing. Its a terrible thing to lose ones marbles. Perhaps I may remember in the morning, it is after 2 am now :)
Hi Eve, if you use PSP, then go to Layers and select Load/Save mask and there are several borders you can apply there which will fade the edges. Also, I use PSP8, and have a lot of plug-in filters which you can also plug into Photoshop I believe. I have one there called VM toolbox which has a faded border. There are a selection of VM plug-in filters which you can download for free if you look around the net. Hope that helps a bit. :) Patti

Thanks Patti, I have followed your advice and installed VM toolbox. I have managed to get a faded border with various methods, and with varying success :) but my mind is still a blank as to how I did it originally. I am thinking it may have been a plugin or maybe another program altogether, I can just remember clicking 'apply' and there it was. If my memory ever returns I will report back - if I can remember how to get here.
Thanks for all help and suggestions - I have learned from them all.
I recently made a party invitation on which the victims photo figured. I cropped the photo having set the crop tool "feather" percentage to a good size fade-out. I then created a transparent "layer" (ahem!) the size of the page I wanted to print, and dropped the cropped image onto it, added some text, and printed it out on the blank card stock. Worked a treat. The edges of the photo faded out very nicely. I could just as well have placed the cropped and feathered image onto a colored background to make a wallpaper image. It's quite easy and fast that way, and you don't have to master much of anything. In fact I do all my work in an old version of Paintshop. I don't even own Photoshop, so you know it had to be simple.
Thanks Regmar, I am pleased to see someone else uses Paintshop :) I really will have to try and master this layering, my brain just can not comprehend it so far.
Although my marbles are still missing I finally discovered how I originally did it - it was using the 'spotlight' feature on the software that came with my Kodak camera. It actually blacks out too much of the picture but applying a black border first compensates for that.
I dont know if this works, but have u tried using the gradient tool, from transparent to white/black/anycolor? The transparent part would be the image, and the rest would be the border stuff.
This is in photoshop, but umm...yeah, thats probably what i would do, it's easy, plus u can edit how far you want the thing to fade, etc. You can also make color changes, hmm hmmm...you know, the fun stuff.
