SO does this plugin allow you to edit desktop icons for XP? If so, can you tell me where to get it? I wouldn't mind making my own icons for my desktop... I used to have an application that was specifically for this purpose but I don't have it anymore.

Icons are embedded into exes and dlls. There are several in "explorer.exe" in the windows folder, and in "mydocs.dll" in the windows/system32 folder, these are probably the ones you are looking to edit. For an illustration of what I am trying to explain: Drag the my computer icon to the deskop (even from the desktop) using the right mouse button, and choose "Create shortcuts here" then right click the shortcut u created and open its properties. Click the change icon button at the bottom and notice what it says under "Look for icons in this file". Try this method on several other icons that u would like to edit in order to see where they are embedded. Hope that helps :).

As noobguy says, they tend to be embedded in DLL files. For example: shell32.dll in the system32 folder. I would presume that you utility can extract them.

However, if you create an icon from scratch and save it as an ICO file, there is no reason you can't just point the shortcut straight to that - it doesn't have to be embedded in another file.
