Rings around the sun?

Hmmm not sure if this is a question for this posting, but I'll ask anyway, does anyone know why the sun had such beautiful rings around it a couple days ago?

I think that kind of phenomenon is usually caused by ice particles in the atmosphere.

...i was thinking it was just diffraction.

(bright day ==> small pupils ==> diffraction ==> halos)

I think if Verena saw this halo effect every time there was a bright day she would have wondered about it before now?

i'd say she just never looked straight at the sun on a bright day. =P

i'll buy the ice in the atmo phenomenon though. Sounds good. :)

they are indeed ice crystals in the atmosphere:

'Halos appear in our skies far more often than do rainbows. They can be seen on average twice a week in Europe and parts of the United States. The 22° radius circular halo and sundogs (parhelia) are the most frequent. '

you're more likely to see them around the moon .. due to that whole "don't look at the sun" thing we all grew up with
