i'm probably bringing this up because my expertise in the area is poor...BUT,
when one sees a photograph (or painting, drawing, fractal, etc.) that he or she selects to print one would put it in a frame. maybe it's because this is a wallpaper site that so many of the members make a frame ON the photograph. i find this interesting and a bit perplexing and wanted to hear what others might have to say. please note, i think the frames that are being placed on the photographs are beautifully done. it's just that a frame done directly on the photograph and an after printing external frame seem would seem a bit confusing.
Most of us use Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro or something similar to touch up our photos. I've added frames as a means of presenting something to give it a nicer touch.
I personally don't post my pictures here with the intent of them being printed out and hung on walls, I post with the intent of them being used as desktop wallpaper.
I have a Deviant Art account with certain images that I've made available as prints. I think others have done the same. I'd personally rather be paid at least *something* for my prints, even if it's just a few dollars.
When I first signed up for Caedes, it was being advertised as a desktop wallpaper site, and I don't really see that that's been changed for practical purposes. But maybe that's just me.
thanks for the link to red bubble. i kind of thought that this is how most would feel (regarding the fact that this is a wallpaper site) and now more than ever agree. i guess i just don't feel confident enough to open an account where someone could purchase one of my photographs.
Hi, Jeenie. I know what you mean about adding frames digitally. It feels "off" to me, too. Maybe it's that even when I frame prints, I'm drawn to very simple gallery-style matting and framing because photographs seem always to me to want to display themselves as themselves instead of as furniture or whatever. The furthest I've gone with it digitally is to add a black border on a few occasions when a good cropping ratio for the image didn't suit the destination -- like a monitor screen.
Jeenie, with regard to selling your work..you'll never know until you try.
I have not sold anything yet but I didn't expect to so soon, just jump in and try it :)
well, what can i say???? as for selling work i'm so bad. i just give anyone whatever they like because i'm soooo happy that they like it. Leslie, you and i seem to be on the same page regarding frames. everyone's opinion interests me. jen
I personally think it depends on the image.. some images look so much better with a frame than without where as others look dreadful with it.. I hope that people who download images from here are NOT printing them or selling them they are for desktop only..
If you want to sell go to RedBubble, I and a few others have sold a few items over there..
Jeenie it doesnt hurt to have a go at selling your work, you'll never know if you dont try.. I thought the same way until I bit the bullet, now I even have some work in local gift stores..
yep.. all i did was when I was out shopping just asked at the counter then took in a few sheets with about 9 samples on each page, walked in and asked if they would be interested in them.. so do it you never know if you don't ask.. I thought for sure they would have said "not interested"..
I use framing / borders more so than not, usually to draw in the viewer to the piece or for enhancing only a smaller piece of a pic and allowing room for icons via desktop wallpaper usage. I print a selected few (8x10) that includes any framing I've done simply for sharing with friends 'n' family. The framing on the printed pic turns out ok and turns out to be a topic of discussion which generally leads the viewer to the site.
I've sold two pics on Shutterpoint, RIGHT HERE , they had NO framing or bordering about them. If you're printing, matting and framing images then I'd do no framing or bording on them in post.
It would be interesting to have a separate thread in which everybody lists the websites where they're selling work - I'm having a good time following the links that have appeared here. The rest of us might get some interesting cards or gifts out of it - for Christmas or for other occasions!
On the subject of 'framing', it's always seemed odd to me as a wallpaper. I sometimes digitally frame small personal photographs for friends and family, but I've only framed wallpaper when I was having trouble getting the right size. In general I find that framed wallpaper doesn't 'fit' my widescreen monitor - probably because I'm quite often downloading 1600x1200 images.
I find many images (speaking of my own , not others) far too busy for wallpaper and that is one of the reasons I add frames to many images. Most people have icons on their desktops and there is nothing more frustrating than being unable to locate them amidst a myriad of flowers or mountains or clouds etc.
Personally I see frames as artwork in themselves, and have spent many hours trying different types to suit an individual picture. I guess I see it as a marrying of photography with creativity.
Anything I want to print for my own use I already have the unframed version.
Back to my original words :)
Some pics suit frames, some don't
Some people like frames, some don't
Many people like either
Some people hate frames and always will.
Having them on a selling site is of course a totally different kettle of fish - I would imagine framing would be unsuitable in most cases for that purpose.
