Yes, you said that out loud, Keith Douglas! No dessert!

I don't understand what you mean about the Caedes Control. How does preventing access benefit non-posting members (or anyone else)? What does "no images posted at the moment" mean, any images at all?

Am I just not reading your comment clearly?

I really like Cindy's idea about the EXIF info and Keifer's Friend's List idea is also very good, as have been a number of other on-topic suggestions I've seen.

Now a general suggestion that I've been mulling over for quite a while and I want to get it in before this is marched off to the graveyard or I lose my nerve (whichever comes first, not meaning to interrupt any discussions now in progress):

One of the suggestions that I saw posted here was that the "Permanent Gallery" name should be changed, and I have to agree wholeheartedly.

If I might suggest a new one: "ShowCase Gallery".
That way it leaves room for fluctuation. Images can be moved in and out. No one has the expectation of permanence.

And while I am on the subject of galleries...

I have had discussions with a general-public contact who comes here to look for desktop images. She told me that the first place she looks (as would most peeps) is in the "New Images" gallery...The emphasis being on the "New=Best" mentality. So the first thing the general public sees are images that no one has voted on. I am not suggesting that the mods do a poor job, but there have been a lot of complaints as to what gets put out for general consumption.

My suggestion is that we have a three-tiered process.

First level: a "slush pile" or whatever name is appropriate to take the place of the "New Images" gallery where all participating users would upload and view first and where the process of elimination starts...perhaps beginning with a larger number of votes, thus cutting down on the mods' time wallowing through the mire and putting responsibility on the rest of us who enjoy the benefits of this site to be more critical of what the general public sees. An arbitrary c-index vote, like 50, might be required before the image is eligible to be put into the next tier.

Second level: After the "slush pile" the images then go to a general view file...anything without the name of "new" that draws the desktop image seeker's attention to photos that are desktop quality and have gone through some sort of close scrutiny. From here the springboard is already set. The process of picking out the best for the ShowCase Gallery is honed down, while allowing the general public to make its own subjective decision as to what they'd like to see on their personal desktops out of a quantity of better quality photos.

This way the number of uploads remains the same, the number of hits on the site remains the same, but the better quality photos are the ones that get the most exposure. I'm in new territory here, and I'm sure there are a number of wrinkles I've missed, but it was just a thought............

DISCLAIMER: If I've stepped on anyone's toes or hurt anyone's feelings, that was certainly not my intent. I had no particular person or mode of operation in mind when I came up with these suggestions.

Lastly, I'd like to thank Gerry Caedes for putting up with us and providing this site and for all the rest of the hard-working people that keep this place going.

CINDY: .. RE: caedes control

if a non-posting member has added names to their friends list (so that they don't miss them) .. they are unable to access their caedes control to "delete", edit, modify their friends list .. because the caedes control does not let you in, if you have no images posted ...

it's, like, trying to park at the country club with a Chucky Cheese parking permit ... even though the caedes control screen would like to let you in, and it likes the pizza you make while you're at work ... it's been told that you have no business on the premises

(*crosses fingers .. chants .. "I hope they have Chucky Cheese in the Greater Boston Metro area ... or my joke is gonna flop*)

and ... those of us, being 'run' as KGB spies, sometimes misread the chalk marks left on telephone poles .. and we think the jig is truly up, our cover blown .. so, in keeping with our training .. we clear all traces of ourselves (including galleries) before making our way, by cover of night, to the safehouse

Hence, we have no galleries "at the moment" ..

see?

"the ability for the wallpaper-search to find an image based on caedes-database number (for rips) .. quicker than paging thru a member's gallery ... Most definately that would make like a little easier..

plus maybe for those who have to send bulk PM's to artists that their images have been ripped a place where all the names are with a box to tick under the comment box, I know that would cut down on time and make it easier..

16) Modify the friends list. Keep the list as it appears in your control panel (although perhaps it should be moved elsewhere - say hidden under a button on your personal page, or as a navigation link under Control Panel). Then create an option in the Caedes Control to be notified when a friend posts a new image.

edit: If you wanted to get really fancy, you could make that applicable to individual friends.

17) Make it possible to search for members who are not artists. While I've found a workaround, it took me ages to figure out how to get to Les (Purmusic)'s page while he was still refining his art and wasn't ready to post anything yet.

1. Delete 50% of images on the site. (everything that isnt "excellent")
2. Filter all new uploads better. Only images that are actually quality pictures or works of art, things you might want on your desktop... like how the site is supposed to be.

Okay... kids everybody outta the pool ! Let's get back to the subject at hand please.

This thread was actually meant as a serious gathering of suggestions for Caedes to mull over, in case he decided to implement some changes around here....he seemed to be curious about what we, the hoi polloi, thought might enhance our time around here. No more fooling around, okay ? Let's get serious.

Now, my suggestion for enhancing everyone's experience on site is to give me & ONLY me the right to up my avatar kb to say ...oh 33.something or another.

Because I have the most darling Marilyn Monroe smiley avatar ever blowing a kiss & with her skirt flying up like in The 7 Year Itch but it looks stupid with the kb knocked down & I am absolutely convinced that it will make everybody's time here on Caedes sooooooo much better if they can only see that avatar.

Because as everyone knows, my taste in avatars is unparalleled & everyone gazes enthralled at their computers just waiting breathlessly for my next one. As you can see, I really provide a much needed service around the site.

I'm sure my fellow Caedesians can only agree with me & endorse my suggestion 110%.

Thank you very much.

Besides... I'm special. I know. Sam told me so.

Perhaps if you gave a notice on the main page or by PM, that images older than (date) or with index lower than, or whatever criterion fits, a month or two before hand, folks might do some self cleaning of their galleries beforehand. In addition, you could say that every three months, the same thing would take place or some such plan. Then no one could offer flack over it because it was a policy of the site.

I'd like to see the Imagemod who rejects an image not be anonymous. We have a right to receive an explanation other than a link to the CoC where no matter how you read it, you can sometimes be left scratching your head in "Wonderment". This way we could personally ask the mod, what criterion they used for the rejection and why they thought it differed from other very similar images that got approval and even made the perm gallery.

Here's a random idea that just occurred to me. Why not make an online Caedes magazine that publishes, once a month, only a few of the best submissions of every category? "I'd like to see the Imagemod who rejects an image not be anonymous."

The reason caedes selects the mods he does is because he believes they are capable of judging the quality of images for themselves. I'm sorry but it simply isn't practical for us to have to explain in detail to every individual that has a snapshot image rejected why they felt they are justified in doing so. Identifying the mod who rejected your image sounds to me like a very bad idea as it would simply lead to more of the vilifying/abusive threads and PM's that already occur from time to time.

********************************************************
Sam, I can see that it would be totally impractical to explain in every case of a rejected image but I can see no harm 'if requested' a simple polite explanation being given (would it take that long?) which would be every bit as useful to the artist as the always encouraged 'thoughtful critiques'.
I also think it would in fact help reduce "the vilifying/abusive threads and PM's that already occur from time to time" to know that the image mod is avaiable for reasonable consultation and not behind a mask of anonymity. The fact that you have been chosen for you impartiality as well as your judgement should be enough for most people, and be respected.
It sounds a bit like a public competition "the decisions of the judges are final and no correspondence will be entered into"
Not imho a very good thing an a caring and sharing community.
The is no excuse under ANY circumstance for abusive/objectionable threads or pms to anyone, mods or members, and the only way to deal with them is to ignore them.Easier said than done, human nature being what it is.
Do the mods have the power to delete at will any abusive threads, as on other forums, before they get out of hand?
Would it be a good idea for each forum in the discussion board to have its own designated mod to lead the forum, keep control, and be on the lookout for potential flareups, and do a bit of diplomatic intervention if required. Delete the thread if required (I think they should be cremated, not sent to the Eles graveyard where they can still be viewed) Ban members if needed (for a day, a week, a month, or permanenly if justified)
It works on other forums, and I am sure it could here.
Or perhaps this already happens, anonymously?

Big work load for 3 mods - but I know from observation you are all superheroes!! :)

I think it would help if there was a named mod for each discussion section that members with issues or objections could report to and expect some action.
Could you tell us which of the 'some abilites' are applicable?

If people felt they did not have to 'demand' explanations re images but rather could enquire quietly they may not be so 'loud', but perhaps you are right about some never accepting any explanation - should they dictate what more reasonable folk may expect?

1. "...I can see that it would be totally impractical to explain in every case of a rejected image but I can see no harm 'if requested' a simple polite explanation being given"

Already being done Lyn and in most instances of a 'request'.

However, look at your own choice of words in the above ... allow me to highlight the salient one ... "impractical". That really is the operative word.

2. "The fact that you have been chosen for you impartiality as well as your judgement should be enough for most people ..."

Are you satisfied with the 'impartiality' that you perceive?

And bearing in mind that most ... most decisions are not made in isolation by any one 'mod'.

3. "It sounds a bit like a public competition 'the decisions of the judges are final and no correspondence will be entered into'
Not imho a very good thing an a caring and sharing community."

Please don't offer up a circular argument and/or reasoning that makes the waters even more murky. Leave 'specious' out of the equation and discussion ... please.

And/or putting a 'spin' on things does not make it any easier to offer an explanation ... nor does it invite engagement in a discussion from those that you are wanting answers/explanations from, simply put.

4. "I think it would help if there was a named mod for each discussion section that members with issues or objections could report to and expect some action."

Again, let me reiterate that most decisions (some are 'no-brainers', if you will) are not arrived at in isolation. I cannot ... cannot, stress that enough. One voice may report ... however, there was a consensus reached and agreed upon prior to the deliverance of those words.

when a member complains loudly of unfair practices, we would prefer that they have no choice but to ask "Which Hitler rejected my image?" ... instead of knowing, in fact, which Hitler DID reject the image

is that clear? ... do you understand that we are entitled to enjoy the site also .. if you saw some of the abuse we receive on a daily basis .. you'd wilt

we state, clearly, several times that we have a desire to lash the rudder to the railing in high winds, in order to sail straight and true ... and we are met with nothing but resistance, arguments, and flailing about that would make even the Bounty's crew stand up and salute

anybody who has sent me a PM with a question has had that question answered .. I have donated my time and email addresses to help new members get images posted ... it seems to be our job to do everything, yet the member's job to do nothing, including understanding and respecting the site's charter mission statement

you want to paint a target on our backs and have a bell to ring to have us come hither ... and ..you wonder why we are a little twitchy in our responses to simple questions ..

when announcing the list of recent promotions, at the bottom of that list, were these words .. "I want to emphasize that Senate positions in no way obligate you to carry out certain duties" ... now, some of you may have noticed that a lengthy list of names in the senate rosters have taken those words to heart

I answer to your query re removing multiple images, I believe it has been suggested in the past that a "select all" button be added to serve this purpose. If you look in the "Feature bloat" forum you might be able to find it.

The last paragraph in Keifers post refers to the fact that many of the mods no longer participate in the running of the site. He is suggesting that the cause of this in some cases might be the negative response to their participation actions that they might feel occurs.

Re: "I never heard if my suggestion to remove multiple images from a gallery at once has been entertained previously in this thread. Does anyone remember?"

Cindy ... this thread was posted to allow for members to make suggestions towards improvement of the site.

In my opinion, this thread has gone way off track as a result of discussions being held in and amongst and beyond another members' reply to a previous posting ... giving their reasons for agreeing with a suggestion made ... or voicing objection.

No problem with that.

It appears that your most recent request and quoted here in my posting ... is asking for an opinion from the staff and other members.

Not going to happen, to be frank ... which as I recall ... is something you hold yourself to with your own words ... and I do so here as well.

Please move past this one and feel free to offer up any other suggestions. They will be given their due consideration and are there in black and white for *caedes to read. Nothing will be lost. Thank you.

I'm sorry. Am I missing where the list of recent promotions is posted?
I believe that the mods are appreciated by most members. You (Sam, Les), in particular, and some others have been most cordial in responding to me and other members. I am sure that being in the positions you have is not an easy task and I wish I could vote you each a c:index, but I hope that you all remember that without the contributing community at large, there would be no Caedes.net to moderate. So, I hope that we can all calm down and have a show of mutual respect for one another in the future. The moderation needs to extend both ways.
P.S. Wrote this before seeing your post, Les.

Moderation does indeed need to go both ways. The members need to do a bit of self moderation in the quality of the images they post (as has been said countless times before).

If an image is rejected there is a good reason for it. If you are unsure as to why, feel free to PM a mod and they'll try their best to give you feedback. Many of the mods already send PM's to members if an image is rejected for some reason that doesn't fall exactly within the snapshot criteria. Unfortunately it simply isn't practical to do so for every image rejected.

Les, thank you for your clarifications on the points I raised.
I was not aware I had, nor was it my intention to do so, offer up a circular argument and far from trying to muddy the waters I was endeavouring to have them clarified. As for 'specious' I am at a loss to understand what you mean - isnt the definition of that word 'insincere' or 'invalid' ? I WAS sincere in my contribution to this 'discussion' and am sorry that it has not come accross that way.
For the record I do know the trials and tribulations of being a moderator - have done it for some considerable time on another different type of site, in a minor capacity and with an obviously much smaller workload, but I do delete threads, I do ban people, mainly spammers, sometimes with consultation with admin and sometimes using the authority I have in my own right - my judgement is trusted there just as yours is trusted on this site, and I give you the respect here that I expect there. I believe that most members do and hope it is so.
You ask if I am satisfied with the impartiality that I receive - I have had no cause to judge it, so the answer must be yes.
I have not had an image rejected (yet) but I would like to be able to ask the rejector if I was curious enough to know why, person to person and that would be impossible under the anonymity that Sam mentioned.
The previous comment on this subject is very reassuring however, and I am pleased to know that, thank you Crusader.

There have been some very useful and valid suggestions in this thread and although it has gone off on a few tangents, I believe that is an indication of the interest and commitment of the members participating, and not an effort to stir things up.

Keith - of course you are entitled to enjoy the site, as you stated, no question about that and I am sorry you get abuse, but blame that on the abusers, not those of us who try our best, admitedly not always successfully, to contribute. I think your words "it seems to be our job to do everything, yet the member's job to do nothing, including understanding and respecting the site's charter mission statement" is a little unfair. many of us spend several hours a day contributing in the only way we are able and that is not 'nothing' - is it?

Now as there appear to be no cookies or pancakes being handed out tonight I am off. :) To look for a tangent :)
I have said enough. I always did talk too much.

My use of the word 'specious' in this context means plausible, but faulty logic.

I did not, could not get from point A: "It sounds a bit like a public competition 'the decisions of the judges are final and no correspondence will be entered into ..."

To point B: "Not imho a very good thing an a caring and sharing community"

... without making the inferences that I did ... a judgement on your part that implied that 'impartiality' had been taken out of the equation ... from the sparseness of clarity as I perceived it ... in your words.

It seems obvious now ... that I have upset you. My apologies Lyn. And I take full blame in this particular veering off of course of this discussion.

You have every right to defend yourself if you perceive that a public slight has been made against you. It was not my intention to have my words weighed as heavily and with the import that they were interpreted ... sincerely.

You have my apology here ... public ... and of course, you may PM me if you feel the air needs to be cleared further.

I know it is asking a lot of you ... but, could we let this thread get back on track?

My reference to the 'no correspondence' phrase was on reflection, inappropriate. I just dont see the reason for anonymity when each of you is respected in your own right for your position and authority. If I wanted to question anyone about a rejected image it would not be to argue the point after the decision is made, just to know the reason, and I would like to know who I am speaking to.I was not doubting anyones impartiality in any way, rather trying to say it is taken for granted that is one of the reasons for your selection to your position.

Well, the magazine idea would be a good way to feature only the best of Caedes submissions, perhaps once a month or on a quarterly basis, and it would be a good way to get people into the site. You could also have how-to articles, reviews of cameras and software programs, etc. It could even be print, although I think digital is probably the easiest and most cost-effective thing to do at the moment. Then keep the rest of the site free.

I don't know how T-shirt sales are doing but I would buy T-shirts if they were available in white or ash grey. I really wish they were. For advertising purposes if I were Caedes I would put Caedes.net on the back or on the sleeve but I'm confused by earlier discussion if new members are desirable or not. I would imagine that they would be.
If I were Caedes, new members would automatically get a friendly welcome e-mail including a list of rules, highlights of FAQs, and information of how to's including how to critique, etc. When you are new here it takes a while to figure everything out. Where to find info you need is not as obvious as it would seem. Bad habits are also formed in the mean time which might not be if nipped in the bud.
I don't know how web sites work but I think an e-mail could be done automatically upon signing up without anyone having to do it manually. I hope that suggestion is helpful but I'd really like a light colored T-shirt even if it has to be pink.

Yes, but I want a light color- white or ash grey and I don't want a golf shirt. I like the hoodie and will likely get one but it's not cold here long enough to wear it much. I know they have the logo but I've dealt a bit in advertising and a stranger would just think it's a meaningless spider without Caedes.net written on it. Just the logo probably doesn't generate much business, if any. I also found that T-shirt sales for my business increased when I added white. It targets a wider group of consumers. The main point was to generate more money and make the t-shirts a better advertising tool. Other than that, I just want a white Caedes shirt. I don't often wear bright colors and it's too hot here in the summer to wear black.

18) Reorganize the FAQ's - One category for "Image Questions" and lump c-index in there, another for "Structure and Organization", and one for "How Can I?" Currently it's a long list to scroll down. Having links to 3-4 pages (one in each category) would make it easier to navigate.

Also update "Why did my image disappear from the site?" to "Why was my image archived/rejected?"

I like the idea of reorganizing the FAQs and yes, it's hard to find what you want, but couldn't that be solved by a list of what's on the page at the top with a link to that topic? I've seen that done all over the place.

I like the idea of reorganizing the FAQs but don't have any suggestions as of how.
Also there seems to have been much controversy about voting. I would like to see guidelines and tips in the voting booth on how to give an accurate score. It seems to me that there are vast differences of the way people vote, their reasoning for scoring. The numbers don't always have the same meaning to all members.
Should the voting be scored on how good of a wallpaper the image will make or simply the skill of composition, clarity, DOF, etc. no matter of the subject. Or if the picture is of a subject like a strange bug that may be repulsive to some but not others, should people be asked to try to be unbiased and give the score based on the skill only or should the score also be judged on the simple attractiveness of the subject matter according to personal preference? Fractals I'm uncertain how to judge as well because I'm clueless of how they are made.
It would be nice if everyone could be on the same page on this matter and maybe at least some of the controversy might be quelched.

All of the above are how to vote especially the most important being unbiased..

As for fractals you don't really need to know how they are made to vote on them.. ask yourself, is there much detail, do the colours suit the image, is there are lot of grain, does it look good to your eye.. pretty much the same as you would a photo.

I like the idea of organizing the FAQ into categories, it would make things so much easier.

Unbiased is how I try to vote but not everyone does and some of the points I made are contradictory so all of them can't be right. I wasn't actually asking how to vote, I was suggesting we have guidelines in the voting booth so we all play by the same rules. But maybe it's simply a popularity contest and it's not important to have that. But if I were Caedes for a day that's what I would do. Even if it was stated that you vote using biased personal preferences (basically popularity) rather than skill. Caedes place so Caedes rules. It would just be nice if we all knew what they were. I've had these conversations with different people before about how to vote and that's how I know that it's haphazard on different voting preferences. In the mean time I will vote as I please as will everyone else which is fine because currently there are no rules or guidelines.

Greg, I'm guessing you were looking for an on-line solution to PM storage, but in the interim, why not just save them as text files? They take up minimal room on a pc, and can be managed by keeping them all in one (or several) folders.

A simple right-click, and selection of "select all, and then paste into a new file. Presto.

Typed this here, instead of a PM, in case someone else might find this useful.

Hey *caedes! I have yet another question! :o) Since the can of PM worms has been opened... would it be possible to have one Edit a PM once it had been sent but not yet received? Also, I just had a bit of a bad experience... good thing I had not typed in a long comment... I had finished my comment here but had not posted it... when I decided to subscribe to this discussion... and lo & behold my comment was gone... is it possible to have only the one line with subscribe refreshed to un-subscribe? Or have 2 Post this Comment buttons... along with a subscribe/un-subscribe button! [Post this Comment] [Post&Subscribe] [Subscribe/Un-subscribe] There is room under the comment box. I think those buttons would be much more accessible than where they are currently... especially in a discussion of this lengthΏ! :o) Anyway, just food for thought!

And yet another... when I edit these comments, I can get an End-of-line but when I edit my Description of a posted image I cannot. Would that be something that could be modified? It really helps in making things more presentable! :o)

And a question: If an edit is done to a subscribed comment, is a trigger engaged to make this known to all who are subscribed?
