While it seems I'm quite late for this, it appears to still be necessary, so I thought I'd create this thread.

There have been requests from a number of people to keep the other streamlined and simply post suggestions there. If you see a suggestion there you disagree with, you can essentially "weigh in" with a "Keep the number of uploads the same". If you feel you want to get into the reasons why, or discuss why you think some of the other suggestions are or are not good ideas, this is the place to let yourself be heard.

I'd like to say that I've seen people reacting to things about how it's unfair to say something or suggest something and then go on to explain how they may have done such and such a thing once in awhile, but really they're not guilty of it, or they're don't do it period. I think we can all take it for granted that such suggestions or comments are not aimed @ anyone except the constant repeat offenders, and there's no reason to take it personally if you're not one of them.

One of the most debated topics seems to be about reducing the uploads which I am one of the people who suggested. My reasons for this are not just about reducing the number of snapshots, which I DO feel would happen if uploads were reduced. At the very least, i think there would be a better ratio of images that are good, amazing, and need work.

There are about 3 times the number of daily uploads that there were when I joined 2 1/2 years ago. For me personally, this is overwhelming and I simply don't have the time to take the active interest and participation that I used to - and I'd like to again. Really the only people this would affect in any major way are the people who have been called "compulsive uploaders" - those who feel as mentioned that they are almost required to upload 2 images a day. I've even known people who are aware that it's really something like 20 hours between time limites, and wait on the edge of their seats to beat the clock and squeeze in 18 or more images in the week. Sometimes those are the newest members who haven't learned to self-edit yet, but either way, it is only those who would be forced to make more choices about what they're uploading. If you already only upload 7-10 images a week or less, then this would have either no effect on you whatsoever, or a very minimal one.

While this site is a great place to learn and grow, and I absolutely feel should stay that way, I think what alot of us are saying is that there has to be a baseline. A level of artistic value from which you can progress. I suggested a newbie gallery because I don't think that newbies should be excluded (others have requested this be expanded to "works in progress" for people who are experimenting or trying out new mediums, that sounds like a good suggestion to me). For people who have been here longer, criticism and limits to keep this site @ a friendly community and quality - not elite - but quality site have to be accepted. If people aren't willing to live within that, there are endless numbers of sites where there are unlimited daily postings, and anything and everything is accepted. THOSE sites are where I truly see "cliques" form because otherwise your art is never seen.

I've got more to say, but I'm taking a break cuz this is just getting too friggin long.

When I stated prior that I'd like it to be a "pay site only" I meant the going rate of $ 3.00/month. I don't think that's too bad... $ 36.00 USD/year

or

46.9147 in New Zealand Dollars

4,111.20 in Japanese Yen

2,211.480 in Iceland Krona

24.9965 in Euros

or if you prefer to pay in Gold it would be 0.044417 ounces

I think some people register to the site to jump on a thread and place ads or spam members or to simply post a snapshot of something. Zat make sense. I just think if everyone paid $ 3.00 USD/month it would cut down on some of that.

Well reasoned, Cat -- and thanks for establishing this discussion thread.

I'd happily settle for posting once a week and perhaps should do so anyway.

I began trying to post once a day as a matter of self-discipline. If I have a "deliverable," I'm far more likely to build the time for it into the week, and making photography an innate part of my life was my one of my top goals this year. Because I could post "only" once a day on Caedes (as opposed to other sites where I have work), I valued the opportunity especially and didn't want to lose it, so I'd start the week with a set of potential uploads and reevaluate them each day before posting,

Sometimes... nothing went up. Sometimes... an image got more work before going up. Sometimes... images went up that when I saw them with a clearer eye the next day on my monitor at work... YUCK. I learned *a lot* from that about critiquing my own work as the weeks slipped off the calendar and am learning still. For decades I've known that the best writing is rewriting. Now it turns out to be true for images as well that putting something you've created away for awhile and revisiting it can reveal ways to improve it that before seemed either impossible or unnecessary.

But once a week would be as effective for me, especially now that a camera is a natural (and wonderful) part of my day. I've just gotten my "dots," but didn't donate in order to post more, just to do a little something to keep this remarkable site viable. And I can see where having to be more choosey in what you put up would indeed help hold back the mounting tide of marginal images.

When I joined in spring, the VB was almost always a feast. It's one of my favorite parts of Caedes.net because it makes me look thoughtfully at images I might not otherwise look at at all and also think about what kinds of changes in method would produce different results across a variety of subjects and shooting conditions. But for the last 6 weeks or so, not much of a feast. Sometimes, a famine.

Clearly, the Mods need more support. If posting less frequently will help, I'm for it.

--Leslie

P.S. Randy, the way the US$'s going, I'd RATHER pay in Euros!!! Isssssssssssh...

Randy, I understand where you're coming from about making it a pay site, but I also think that becomes a problem for alot of people who either can't afford even that much, or who ease into life slowly here before donating. I think various suggestions that have been made about limiting new members to being able to start no more than 2 threads a day, or having their posts and comments and images moderated go alot further to cutting down on the spamability while still keeping the site open and friendly for non-spammers who are just starting to stick their toes in.

Leslie, thanks for your input and your willingness to see something not as a personal limitation, but a site enhancement. I don't think going down as far as once a week would be useful (except as a self-limitation), because that low would be detrimental I think in terms of people's daily enjoyment of the site, and their ability to quickly get feedback and grow. You learn fastest when you can keep doing something and put it into practice as you get input or directions. I also know there are a number of artists on here who may not post anything for a month or 2, but then have a spurt of activity and post 5 or 6 images in a week, and more the week after that. That was my reasoning behind keeping the daily limits the same, but changing the weekly allowance - I'd even say the monthly allowance, but I have a feeling that would result in a flood of images @ a certain time of the month (NOT THAT ONE MUSHY BOY), which would defeat the effort to keep the flow @ a manageable level.

I still think if you increase the donation a lot of people would pull out of it because they couldnt afford it.. you have to remember too that while its only $3US this is world wide and the US $ varies considerably with other countries which make it more expensive plus most countries get charged a currency fee on top of it.

I like the idea of "works in progress" because I could have used it for my last image instead of it being classed as a snapshot because I was experimenting with different settings and the macro and wanted some REAL critic

story time, children, gather 'round

once upon a time, there was a big bad wolf .. he didn't own the forest he resided in, he was just visiting\passing thru, chillin' for a while ... he said, "You know, you little pigs could stand to pay higher fees for living in this grand forest" ...

the little pigs began to worry, and fuss, and grow odd appendages out of their heads, they began to distort and get 'all bent out of shape' ... stomach acids began to eat at stomach linings and, in order to pay their higher medical bills, they reached the conclusion that they'd have to leave the grand forest before these higher rents were levied against them

crying: "Pigsation without representation" .. ;)

as the little pigs began to remove their paintings from their walls, the grand forest lost some of its luster, shrooms shriveled, ferns freaked (silver and green) ... the pines pined for olden times, the oaks ached ...

when the moving company, "3 pigs and a truck" drove off into the hinterlands .. the big bad wolf, who was just passing through to begin with, continued on his way .. the way of passing through

when he got to the river, he said "you know, this river is so grand, you fish should be paying professional fish funds for your fodder" ... Fitz the Fish began to dial this brother's moving company "3 Fish and a truck" ...

K, I must be lost here. The majority of comments are due to the costs? As in what, an increase? Someone fill me in, cause, well, I’m lost here.

I did mention added perks as to added cost.
Do I think that the total donation should increase? No. $3.00 should be plenty. People are on a budget, no doubts about that.

In a lot of places, Hell, lets face it, times are tough.
I’d just like to clarify, when I mention added perks, let’s say (on top or in addition to what we have here) 10 new perks. K, so, thus far, if people pay the same amount, maybe they get 5 out of 10 NEW perks.

The peeps that wish to shell out more cash (or tormenting souls…) gets the additional perks.

Are these comments cause of a pay for like visit site like?
K, maybe I should just like pretend I know nadda….

Yeah, but a pig's worth a little change. I have entire quarters that I'm willing to toss for a good oink in my lens, dude. Let's not discourage them. Esp. on Christmas. They could have been dinner, y'know, so let's celebrate life, however brief and close to the frying pan. Breakfast approaches and eggs think they're getting bacon.

Sandi, let's start out by saying that Caedes is in general a great community filled with some wonderful people. However, just like the real world, there are a few bad apples - proven over time by their behavior. Also just like the real world, there are even more great people - and some of them have a few failings - either once in awhile, or even just regularly in one particular area.

You asked why people wanted to remove the "Most Active Members" list, and I told you - not in a mean or insulting way, simply laying out the reasons some people think it's become detrimental. Other people agreed that the behavior goes on. Not one of them ascribed it to most, but have said a sufficient number of people do it to create a problem. Nobody even said it's the people who have made it to the list who do it. I also told you that I know it happens for fact, because I've been told outright by some people that they've done it.

So the problem is that your defensiveness is all out of proportion and improperly placed. Calling the comments mean or cruel and saying they leave people feeling poorly SIMPLY FOR STATING THEM is denying the truth of the activity when it's clearly happening. As was said before, the only reason for someone to feel poorly is if they themselves are guilty of the behavior. If they are, they SHOULD feel guilty and poorly, because they've done something that's let's not say wrong exactly, but not in the best of spirits, and not constructive to our site. If they're not guilty of it, they have no reason to feel anything but pissed @ the people who have done it, for once again taking something that was meant to be a good feature and tossing in the rotten apple.

If you want to be upset on someone's behalf, a better response would be "Wow, that really sucks that people do that, souring something that's a nice boon for people who are active around here. I had no idea. Can we find a way to save the list instead of deleting it?" or "Do you really think it's enough people doing it to create a problem?" Getting upset @ the people who are genuinely trying to help because they've raised an issue they see is a problem is not helpful at all, and just leaves them feeling frustrated and aggravated for having put themselves forward.

It's like Uncle Larry @ Xmas - at 1st people tried to stop him from playing Charades because he never called out the category right - but then Uncle Moe started coming over every year, and he always forgets and talks, and now nobody wants to play Charades @ all. Aunt Jenny made one last try last year, but then Uncle Curly came and he whipped out a banana cream pie and hit little Jimmy in the face when it was his turn. Everybody loves em, but they killed the game for the other 15 people.

It is unfortunate to allow others to manipulate our behaviors when we know them to be good ones and we know we are doing the right thing. We were given this forum to speak freely, not to impune or point fingers. Hopefully in this new year, we can all strive to be more understanding of each other.

You will be led to the knowledge of the internal things which are invisible to you, by the external things which you see before you. . . . Even so then, we can represent to ourselves in thought the Author of all that is, by contemplating and admiring the (visible) things which He has made, and ever brings into being. - Hermes

Very well said Cindy! After checking out the most active list I'm at the top still Oh well. Hopefully I'll drop down a bit yet. Perhaps others are not voting as much either.

Cyndi is correct, this is not about pointing fingers - which is why names have not been named etc. You shouldn't allow another's behavior to change yours in a negative way. If you vote frequently and well, that's a good thing. Don't stop doing it so that you'll drop lower on the list. That's making the list bad in an entirely different way. If you're there for the right and proper reasons, then take pride and be happy.

Also, you should always feel free to express your opinion even if it differs from the majority. All I'm saying (and I believe others) is to please step back and consider. You've every right to feel upset and angry over things like the list and having people view it differently because some people have made it into a competition - but be upset at the people who caused it, not the people who made you aware of the situation.

You should be able to defend people you think are being wronged (is that a word? my brain is mushy atm), just try and identify who is truly causing the wrong, and suggest/see if we can find positive solutions to problems/issues.

:) Hello I have been on holiday :) I came back and after reading all the comments here and in the other thread since I went away I need another holiday to digest all and recover :)

. . and horrors! . . I have fallen off the bottom of the most active members list!

BUT my Friends list is enormous - Keifers idea of being able to toggle it off and delete en masse is good.

Happy New Year everyone, its good to be back :)

Lyn, the reason for the anonymity is because while YOU and a number of others might respect the mods and their decisions, there's a sufficient portion who doesn't. Some who hurl abuse, do not ask questions but rather demand that their artistic vision be acknowledged and/or tell the unfortunate mod on the receiving end that they have no class and taste, or keep trying to upload an image that's already been rejected 3 times. Sufficient enough numbers and hassle to warrant an order of protection that we hide out in the clubhouse, while the sane and logical people know that a polite private request directed to any mod will result in that mod doing some investigating and coming back with an answer.

I don't think that's too much to ask from the general community in return for allowing the mods to continue the steady workload and attempt to steer the site towards a quality upload, sharing and learning place.

Point taken :)
ALTHOUGH I see no reason why abusive, demanding, dishonest people(as in trying to reupload a rejected image) should remain members - can't they be permanently banned if a warning or two does not suffice?
Click . . get rid of them - none of you deserve to be hassled in that way.
Regardless of their artistic talents, unreasonable abuse should not be tolerated. Politeness costs nothing. If they were to know that impoliteness could cost them their membership it may go some way towards curbing it.

Simplest answer… once in awhile even the sane logical have a "moment" - we're all human, we're generally forgiving if it results in an apology and a return to sanity. For the continually abusive, they do ultimately lose their memberships and are banned, but we still gotta DUCK AND COVER, DUCK AND COVER, while they prove they're not worthy of them.

One in a while (questionable) sane logical humans (maybe also questionable :) )go off-topic in serious threads too.
I apologise for that, it should have been in this one :)
