May I ask how the featured image on the home page is chosen? It seems that in the short time that I have been visiting Caedes, several images have made appearances there more than once. Is the image chosen randomly, or by one of the image mods, or by some other method?
if you notice, its actually also very short. the next image is rotated in within a very short time. its not like they are being praised for there excellent and one image stays up there all day, they dont even stay up for a few hrs.
Actually noob, I'm pretty sure I remember a time when every page refresh brought up a new featured image. I'd assume that this was changed to reduce server load. I think that more than anything it's a way to showcase an image on the site to show what's available to new visitors.
I did notice that the rotation of the images changes very frequently. I wasn't concerned whether or not they were being praised for being excellent, although most of them are excellent and do deserve praise. :) I was just curious as to how it was selected. There is such a wealth of great images here on Caedes, I was suprised to see it repeat as often as it does. But then again, if it changes very rapidly that would contribute to more repeat images :) That's my extreme mental powers figuring that one out! lol
The image is automatically selected every ~15 minutes based on a selection of images in the perm. galleries with a certain minimum c-index. I have also noticed that it tends to repeat rather more than I would naively expect from the rand() funciton. =\ Maybe the minimum c-index value is too high?

I had a look at the image selection code. It chooses the featured image randomly from the list of images which have more than 5 votes and have a top 10% score. That means that right now it is choosing between around 90 images.

But don't the images in the top ten percent stay rather static? How often does a new image get into the top ten percent? At a rate of 1 new image displayed every 15 minutes, all the images are shown in just under 23 hours. Am I making a mountain out of a molehill? :)
new images constantly go into the top 10% and it constantly changes. new images often jump up into the top 10 really fast from high ratings, and then fall down from lack of downloads within a week. Making the top 10% change rather often.

I would like to re-ask Rebecca's question. There have been a lot of changes recently and I am not fully understanding the new system. Is there anybody in-the-know who could explain?
