Cal, here is an excerpt from the Code of Conduct which can be found in it's entirety under FAQ.
"Only upload images which you have full intellectual property or fair use rights to or which are in the public domain."
My understanding is that we (the public) do not have rights to images in a museum.
So, I personally would not post a picture of someone else's picture. :=)
It probably depends on the galleries policies in regards to their works. For example if it were a modern gallery I imagine as an artist I wouldn't want people taking photos of my work and posting them willy nilly on the net... not different to people who take our work from caedes and distribute it on other sites.
I was thinking of posting a pic of my favorite painting in a small history/science museum I was allowed to take my camera inside and got a very nice shot of it and it makes a great desktop The painting is "Marion crossing the PeeDee" it depicts Francis Marion & company crossing the Great Pee Dee River it was painted in 1852 by William T. Ranney I really don't see what would be wrong with it I thought just as Jonathan did! Thanks for the input!
these are very old works. copyright laws say something about how after a certain amount of time, its in the public domain.. so i dont see what could be wrong with it, as long as you credit the orginal artist and museum..
I agree with above just as long as you credit the artist and what museum it is at i think it could be alright, mvillian is my dad and i have seen the photo and i do think it would make a great desktop
Why not simply ask the museum what their policy is regarding images and then posting them on a website with credit given? I believe in going to the source to get my answers.
You would save a lot of time & effort by doing that. A phone call would suffice I imagine.
Good luck in your quest for an answer! :=)
