I figure I'd open this up because there are a number of awesome open-source image creation and editing softwares around that noone seems to know about...post your own if you find some...
Modelling-
~Blender(3ds max/Maya)- an awesome 3d modeling and animation tool, the interface is a bit unlike the normal modellers, but it certainly is possible to create quality models with it.[Windows, Mac, Linux]
Image Editing(Photoshop/PSP)-
~The GIMP- forget the low cost alternative of Paint Shop Pro...how about the no cost alternative? The GIMP offers everything that Photoshop has to offer: layers, filters, image creation, manipulation, as well as many of the plug-ins that you would have to buy to get(such as the fractal makers FractFlame and FractExplorer). Must also download GTK for it to work properly. [Windows, Mac, Linux]
~Irfanview- a fairly popular and useful image viewer that can be used to manipulate images, but it's major selling point is the amount of different file formats that can be used(such as icon and animated cursor formats) and it's speed.[Windows]
Landscape Renders(Bryce)-
~Terragen is a software that is free for non-commercial use. I debated whether putting this one up or not because it's truly not freeware, but still it's good software. This is a very good program for creating realistic landscape renders. It's also quite easy to use. [Windows, Mac]
Fractals-
~Tierazon is a good program for creating abstract fractals. The software used to be freeware, and still is, but he's started having people pay money to keep his server online. However, it is still possible to find the freeware installer.[Windows]
~Gnofract 4D has similar features to Tierazon plus a few. I've never used this one, although it looks good.[Linux, ports to Mac]
~Apophysis is a very good freeware frax flame editor and renderer.[Windows]
~ Quat is a 3d fractal making program that can be made to create quality images.[Windows, Linux]
~Note: The GIMP(mentioned earlier) can also be used to make fractals.
Other Stuff-
~and for those who like to mess with audio, Audacity[Windows, Mac, Linux] is great for sound manipulation, and Anvil Studio[Windows] is about as good as it gets freeware-wise in the composition department.
~Messengers
Trillian[Windows] a very good all in one messenger, GaIM[Windows, Linux] is another.
~Spyware and Antivirus
AVG[Windows] or Clamwin[Windows] both very good virus removers and shields. I'd also recommend Lavasoft's Ad-aware[Windows] and Ccleaner[Windows] for other various errors and spyware removal.
As far as I know there isn't. Give away of the day doesn't really impress me. You can only install the program on the one day, and then you can never install it again. For those of us who regularly blank our computers, it isn't a very good option.

FREE PLUG INS (for windows) .. should work with all programs that use standard filters .. (PS, PSP, Photo-Filtre, etc)
perspective @ vicanek.de ... The Perspective plugin lets you carry out both active ("tilt") and passive ("untilt") transformations. You can rotate the image around thre axes, then reposition and resize it. Grid lines can be displayed both before and after transformation.
panowarp @ vicanek.de ... This plugin lets you perform pixel transformations used in panorama stitching. I am well aware of some excellent panorama stitching tools out there which do it all automatically without you having to bother much. These work fine if you take your pictures with a tripod and make sure the horizon is in the middle, but if you don't, you can have a real hard time. My plugin will give you full control, but that also means you have to play around a bit.
colorcube @ vicanek.de ... This plugin provides a 3D visualization of all colors in an image. Colors are represented as RGB-values, hence each color corresponds to a point in color space. Histograms, although useful, represent only projections of the full 3D color distribution, hence important subtleties may remain hidden. The Color Cube plugin helps in detecting color clipping etc.
Greyscaler @ thedigitalartshop ... Our RGB to greyscale filter was created to add more flexability to converting images to black and white. The first three sliders control each individual channel. This can be useful in bringing out hidden detail in the picture or isolating individual channels. In additon there are the more usual controls for Contrast, Brightness and a Depth (pseudo gamma) control.
.. (Greyscaler is probably the only FREE item of interest here .. but .. I don't want to chew your food for you)
note: .. when I DL a plugin, I usually DL the example interface pic as well .. this allows me to find something later that I've burned to CD .... but .. (*see above food-chewing remark*)
These plugins, and others, were brought to my attention via the email newsletter from .. THE PLUGIN SITE .. a once a month stork delivery to my box .. if you're interested ..

QUOTE: .. So, you need to finish up a design project that requires the image-editing capabilities of Photoshop along with the vectorized lines of Illustrator, and it needs to be animated in Flash with documentation in a PDF. However, you blew your budget on bling and a sweet alpaca-skin bongo set.
Take your head out of the microwave. There is indeed a way to save your project and your wallet from the $2,500 price tag of Adobe Creative Suite 3. You just have to be a bit creative.
While it's been a while since I started a sentence with "while" .. and while the item below is not graphics related, directly .. it could free up space on your computer to hold more graphics

Some of us are old enough to remember when ASCII was the Cat's Meow of computer graphics
... also .. glassgiant.com is an online ASCII generator that operates on a "don't ask-don't tell" system .. don't tell it you have a MAC and it'll never know
I've fed it some pretty large images as a "proof of concept" for an idea I had .. it works well
Ahh the old ASCII pics.. I remember way way way back in the land before computers.. we used to do pics ASC style on the old typewriters.. OMG.. I'M OLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!... lol..
*NOTE* A typewriter is a keyboard that doesn't use electricty.. has its very own built in printer.. ;) hehehe

*sigh... ok.. AND electric typewriters that DOESN'T have a MONITOR.. considering I was talking about the dinosaur years where you had didnt have it easy.. =PP
OMG... i used to use one of those... aahh the memories of changing the typing ribbon.. getting the ink all over your fingers when your trying to get it to go through the little holes.. having to really hit the keys hard to get them to move.. no delete button on it so you rub it out or start again... *sigh those were the days.. lol.. OI!!!!!!!!!!! you saying i'm old????? hmmmmm????
I didn't see 'today's typewriter' because I got the following message when I went to the site:
"This Web site is intended for use by US residents only."
Oh - OK.
As for the old typewriter - never had one that old, but we had clunky portable typewriters with plastic covers; just machinery - no electricity! I remember how, every so often, your fingers would go plunging in between the keys. "Ow". And it would go "wheeBUNK!" with every key you hit. Mind you, so did the electric typewriter, in its own way. A sort of electrical, satisfying, echoing "wheeeeeBUNK!" And your fingers no longer got jammed in the works. Now THAT was progress.
Sorry, I'm supposed to be going out - won't dally any longer...
Unlike these days where I fool around browsing the internet, wasting all kinds of valuable time, in the good old days, I had one similar to THIS and I had one of THESE too...back then I was really ready for business !
While I'm here, some may be interested in THESE PRODUCTS...unfortunately the download is just a demo though.
Due to the recent slow down of the site, my comments and thank you's have been few as it was very time-consuming...will catch up ASAP...meanwhile, a group thank you to all and keep up the great work everyone.
Im really impressed by this program. It just does two things, zips files and unzips them from the right click menu. Its so simple even your granny could use it and it works with 64 bit versions of windows too. JustZIPit
Quote: .. CutePDF Writer (formerly CutePDF Printer) is the free version of commercial PDF creation software. CutePDF Writer installs itself as a "printer subsystem". This enables virtually any Windows applications (must be able to print) to create professional quality PDF documents - with just a push of a button!
you need to install --> converter.exe .. (Ghostscript 8.15)
☻-----> You select CutePDF as your "printing" device when you desire to create a PDF .. (do NOT check "print to file") .. give your PDF a destination and name when prompted
Works Great !! .. I used it for a PlugIn Information Web Page (8 pages, scrollable) from within FireFox... and I PDF'd a 16x12 JPG image as a "fit to page" dimension from within Irfanview

Hi guys,
Does anyone have a recommendation for free HDR software (if there is such a thing)? If not, what's the best low budget paid version? All thoughts gratefully received!
Thanks,
Kevin.

A nice little companion program for CutePDF is PDF Info.
It's very basic but allows you to edit the Author and keyword details of the PDF you created. Definitely an essential tool if you don't want your boss to know that Poison Pen PDF was from you! :P
I know it got a plug on this thread three years ago but ArtRage has grown up a lot since then. The basic version is still free and while its not as good as its closest comparative product Autodesk Sketchbook Pro (formerly Alias) the free bit counts for a lot. For a modest fee you can get the full version which is much closer to competing with the Alias product.
ArtRage Starter Edition can be downloaded at no cost. The Full version can also be purchased for $25 US. ArtRage 2.5 Starter Edition gives you 8 painting tools and lets you create, save, and print as many pictures as you like and doesn't limit their size. ArtRage 2.5 Full Edition contains four new paint tools, the ability to paint on multiple layers, metallic paint, stencils and rulers, and a long list of additional features.
I gathered these for Jacqueline on another thread and thought I would post them here as well, for anyone new to 3D modeling, before spending a significant amount of money on the more known 3D programs. I have not used any of them yet, but I may be looking into the Ivy Generator and Truespace 3.1. Anyone having experience with these programs, it would be great to hear your opinions.
BlockCAD (building virtual models with Lego-like bricks)
This was quite interesting to read about:
DAVIDLaserscanner (3D laser range scanning. All you need to build a 3D scanner is a PC, a camera, a background corner, and a laser that projects a line onto the object you want to scan)
Ivy Generator (creates realistic ivy, including leaves)
Planet Genesis (Terragen clone - creates 3D landscapes, planets, etc.)
BRL-CAD (solid modeling system, includes an interactive geometry editor, parallel ray-tracing support for rendering and geometric analysis, path-tracing for realistic image synthesis, network distributed framebuffer support, image-processing and signal-processing tools. Distributed in source code form. Visit project page for downloads)
Dusty (realtime 3D smoke simulator. Allows to simulate smoke and fire in realtime)
gSculpt (open source, procedural subdivision modeler. Comprehensive set of polygon modeling tools, including most of those found in Wings 3D, and more)
K-3D (3D animation, modeling, and rendering. Uses mutiple rendering engines including the rederman engine)
MegaPOV (custom unofficial versionof POV-Ray with a lot of added features)
Moonlight/3D (3D illustration, modeling, etc. Reported to be an easier learning curve than Blender)
Moray (Interactive wire-frame modeller that allows you to model a world for POV-Ray interactively, allowing you to see the setup of your scene as you build it)
QUOTE .. Image Tricks is a free application to edit and generate images. ... It uses Mac OS X Tiger Core Image filters that transform pictures to unimaginable extent and apply advanced visual effects. The program can create unique artwork you may use as business card background, for web design, print materials and more.
# 63 Core Image Effects and Filters (72 in Pro version)
# 12 image generators (19 in Pro version)
Pricing: Standard version is FREE, Pro version $14.95
AVI2DVD is a freeware tool (for Windows) that uses various other freeware tools for converting AVI, WMV and other video files to Video DVD format. Its dialog is available in 21 languages. If you keep the "Make ISO" check box activated, it will create an .iso file, which can easily be burned as a Video DVD with the free ImgBurn tool. Alternatively if you deactivate the "Make ISO" check box in AVI2DVD, you can burn the resulting Video DVD files with the DVD Mastering Expert feature of the BurnOn CD&DVD freeware.
*SIGH!! pats pig boy on the head.. hand him a roos tail.. now off you go and play with the dingos and crocs oh and watchout for the brown-eyed mullets =PP...
Everyone who uses IrfanView should download the latest copy. It has enhanced plug-ins, and it has a pretty cool clone tool too on its new Paint toolbar! It is now a way-cool program, and for a photographer it has most of the tools you need for basic photo-editing.
"Jim Clatfelter offers three new plugins (for Windows): AAA BLENDER lets you open a mask, texture, grunge or paint layer and blend it with your image with various blend modes. It is also possible to blend the current image or a modified version of it with itself. AAA Buzzer simplifies images while retaining
sharp edges. It works slower at a higher ratio and also removes more details. AAA Framer adds a variety of frames to images. You can adjust the width, contour, brightness and frame color."
"Version 1.5.6 of the virtualPhotographer plugin (for Windows) has a new resizable and more organized dialog. It offers 200 presets, a split-screen preview and a batch processing option. OptikVerve Labs also an image processing application called virtualStudio (for Windows). Apart from standard image editing features virtualStudio also supports Photoshop plugins that are installed in its Plug-Ins sub folder. The virtualPhotographer plugin is installed there by default."
"Vue 7 Pioneer (for Win/Mac) from Cornucopia3D is a free 3D creation and animation application. It is meant for newcomers to easily create realistic 3D landscapes. It is available in English, German and French. Content and additional modules can be purchased to enhance it."
"PhotoColorist (for Windows) lets you colorize B&W images. It lets you choose a certain color for e.g. skin, hair, grass and sky areas and lets you select these areas in the image with the help of brushing or scribbling."
"Tintii Photo Filter (for Windows/Linux) is a free tool that converts photos to B/W while keeping one color. A Photoshop plugin is also installed, but requires to purchase an activation key in order to use it."
