I have just uploaded an image with a religious theme (I had intended to put it in the new religion gallery) but it is not a photograph and I ended up puting it in the abstract gallery.. was this the right thing to do?

Shining Light? Difficult to say...I guess it is a little abstract, but like you say it has a religious theme. Is it based on a photo?
