What to put in the FAQs?

I'm making a FAQs for the site and I'd like to use this thread to gather a list of frequently asked questions that have showed up in the discussion board. Please list any questions that you think have come up more than once or which are common among new visitors to the site.

I already tried going through all the old discussion board topics, but that was way too difficult.

Thanks.

Lauren, the aediles only approve image uploads, they have no say on what images make it to the perms or get archived.

I can see what you're saying Lauren, with regards to people complaining. However, what I was more going after is a rationale behind the judgements. My intent for suggesting to have this in the FAQ section is so that users can see what the thought process is behind what it takes to get into perms and thus incorporate this rationale into their creations. Which IMHO would improve the quality of the images submitted to the site (assuming the creator had said rationale in mind in the midst of creation). Of course art is subjective, that's what makes it so interesting. One person may see something completely different in a photo than another.

All I'm asking for is that users are informed of the rationale of these descisions so they can improve their own images.

Canuck, that is why we have the comment page for each image, unfortunately many people just write something like 'nice image', or 'wow this is going in my favs'. Many people seem to be hesitant to give a constructive critique.

In the Code of Conduct it states: 'Critiques of people's work should be constructive and if possible informative and supportive. If you don't like something, say so and then tell how it could be improved.'

I… cannot agree more. *ducks now and leaves this note behind as I run away*

One of the things that is best about this site is the people who are willing to offer help and advice, especially the more knowledgeable members who can advise on technical aspects. If offered in a manner that is truly constructive, no one should ever be offended because someone didn't see their vision of the work. If you cannot take critique, this site is probably not the place for you, and I think it's horrible that people have stopped offering honest opinions for fear of offending someone.

My personal opinion is that by NOT offering your insights, you deprive the artist of another viewpoint, or help that would allow them to improve their work and achieve the goals they seek. It also unfortunately encourages the uploading of some work which is obviously substandard, and the 1st thing that drew me to this site last year (before I found the Off-Topics threads 8•P) was the quality of the images.

As for how images get promoted… well… I think the F.A.Q's should just contain the previous "why did my image disappear" message (modified to "why was my image archived" of course). lol.

People should also remember that if they see an image that is similar to their own in the perms, and if that was good enough, how come theirs' wasn't? well... it's cuz it IS a similar image... they've already got one of those in there! If you see an image you admire, replicating it for yourself to achieve the effect/impression is a great thing, but going beyond it to find a different angle with your own personal touch will create a unique image that says alot more... and that's what you should be lookin to upload. 8•)

*puts soapbox away*
*goes into hiding* no no, that's quite alright… I KNOW I'm gettin flak for this post. I'll just let you all yell @ your monitors for a bit, k?

I agree animaniactoo, I don't think you have to worry about people comin' after ya ;)

I think, if the explanation of what the rationale for judging images for the perms is not going to be put up, then quality critiques of images should be encouraged. I'm not sure how this would work, but perhaps some minor members of the senate (that have the technical knowledge of course) or perhaps apoint people without voting powers (a critiqing team?) in the senate that could go through images and critique them. Of course going through all the images uploaded would be a little unwieldly (sp?), perhaps when a user uploads an image there could be a little box to check for critiquing (just like you check to make sure the image applies to the CoC).

This is just kind of a rambling off the top of my head, I don't know what everyone else thinks, but I'd really like to learn and improve on my images, this might be a tool to do it?

Back to the main point of this latter bit...I know an explanation is out there already for the various elements of caedes, but I'm confuddled. How is the C-index related to voting? how often are images added to the permanent gallery? etc.

maybe there should be a "the life of an image on caedes" section to read. It could walk through the story of a random picture, explaining the various routes it can take. It would be crucial to cleary explain how the various technical things, like voting, c-index, and even senate interact with said image.

One that I get a lot is "how do you get started making fractals?" I think people don't realize that it takes time to learn how to do stuff, but the easiest way to get started is to just download Apophysis or something similar and play with it for a while. Playing with a program is the best way to learn what works and what doesn't.

(*takes a bow*) .. thank you .. I'll be here all week

actually .. if you're referring to the slash at the end of the DOT COM .. that is acceptable and common .. it is when you are linking to an image or other file (like a .zip) that the slash breaks the link

if you think about the PATH and FILE components of your operating system addresses .. saying http://www.caedes.net/ is equivalent to saying C:\images\ ... as in, it is the parent folder in the hierarchy

saying .. http://www.caedes.net/keifer-10099187.jpg .. is a folder AND a final destination filename and therefore does not have a slash because only a folder can have a slash .. as it means "inside of" ... in PATH parlance

.. ;) ... at least I think that's what it means

a lot of people who are using that example to create their links are including that slash because they don't know the above reasoning (right or wrong) .. and it breaks their links

to make my case .. point your mouse pointer at the CAEDES logo in the upper left of this page .. and read the resulting address in the left side of your status bar (bottom of your browser) .. notice the ending slash

"How do I make links within my comments?" could become "Which HTML codes are acceptable within descriptions and comments?" with examples of the following, depending on which are allowed: a, b, i, u, sub, sup, code, acronym, et cetera. I know that really would've helped me out when I first joined.

Also, maybe add something somewhere explaining what size/resolution image is ideal to upload so that there will be as many different sized images as possible for people to download.

I hope I haven't repeated any suggestions but there are too many to read through up there.

What is the Treacle Club?

The Treacle Club aka ‘The Treacle’s’ is a collective that has migrated from being a standing joke to the status of a significant negative influence on the community aspect of the site.

How are they a negative influence? As is usually the case with most cliques, The Treacle’s are ostensively a purely self-serving entity that protects both their egos and interests vehemently by any means available, fair or foul.

What does that entail exactly? Try dropping a few grains of salt in the honey pot and find out for yourself.

How do I know if someone is treacle coated? Again, an easy test for you to carry out – try proposing something new in the forums that benefits everyone by removing the ability to segregate or target people in either a positive or negative light and just watch those wagons form a defensive circle. Real quick. Denial also plays a big part in the fabric of the treacle uniform.

Exactly how far does their influence extend? Sadly, a lot further than anyone would like. Needless to say the level of blatancy and impunity would suggest a very unhealthy level.

Surely a little frosting adds to the good nature of the community? As Mary Poppins would say, a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down but any good doctor would also tell you that too much will make the body rot. So it is here.

It would be useful to put a line in the FAQ indicating what the maximum size is for an uploaded file. We get periodic requests from users asking why their image won't upload, and it's usually file size that causes the problem. I frankly don't know what the maximum allowable size is, so I would find it useful to have a line in the FAQ to which I could point users when they ask me why their files won't upload.

0∈ [?]
+philcUK
02/17/09 11:24 AM GMT
Images are occasionally archived extremely swiftly for a variety of reasons including when they have been repeatedly uploaded with little or no changes in order to jockey for position near the front of the galleries (although they will most likely be rejected as well), when they are an extremely poor snapshot that shouldn’t have slipped through the net in the first place or when images are continually placed in incorrect galleries by members – pet snaps in animals gallery, photos in computer landscapes, manipulations of your own work in rework etc etc.

Votes scores can changed after being archived as the figures are not updated instantly and can take a day to update.

I am new to caedes so can someone help me, I take pics in JPEG format. I notice two or three different size options if one wants to download an image, but when my pics are on the site there is only one size option?

Should I use RAW format for taking pics, I understand that for changing things after is easier in RAW, but does it make a difference for posting on caedes.

Thank you for any help you can give me.

The larger the image you upload, the more size options will be available; so try to take your photographs, and upload them, in as large a size as you can.

I don't believe you can upload a .RAW file to caedes as RAW is a data format file rather than an image format. The best format to use is PNG as this prevents any loss of quality, but JPG is perfectly fine. This info is actually already in the FAQ.

More image per page view. Something like 100 per page.

Dear Caedes & community,
I, personally Marzena or SAM, want to get the right to decide/vote on more things on Caedes. I do not mean exactly the highest position as this is reserved, but just a little wee bit less.
If nothing else counts, then the duration of my stay here should count - almost from the very beginning - I have seen many new members coming, getting stars here [hats off to them - since they - my favourite ones deserve it fully (will anybody French speaking remind me the spelling of chapaux bas - trembling LOL)]. This is my proof of experience = qualification in this case.
Also I have seen many friends and good artists go and/or withdraw - I never learnt any reasons and dislike somewhat the air of secrecy - which is strange as I am a secret agent myself. LOL
Yours SAM

How long until an image is moved from "new images" and archived or placed in a permanent gallery?

@ tburn101
If that is infact a suggestion of some thing to put in the FAC, I'll second that.
For the time being and in case that is actually a question I'll quote the following from elsewhere...

"There is a large number of images uploaded every day. I have 2 previous discussion threads for you to read through that might help you understand the *archiving function.

HERE and HERE."

Hope it helps any one who is wondering.

Is it possible to give an explanation in the FAQ on how the Journal function is to be used. I for one am not clear on that.
Thanks,
Phil

Would be useful to have some guidance as to adding an image to the current contest.

Please add a section on how to delete your Caedes account. I've been searching for over half an hour and can't figure it out. Can someone please email me at lamathe@hotmail.co.uk and explain how to delete my Caedes account. Thanks, L Mathe.

There is no way to delete an account, so that's why you can't find it. Best you can do is remove the images from your gallery if you have any there, and otherwise just stop using the account. If you don't see this message, I'll e-mail this info later.

"One reason is that deleting an account completely would allow someone else to then register the account. This would potentially cause problems of attribution. Another reason is that the "account" is really just a single line in a database that isn't very important at all, particularly if you've removed all the sensitive information."

There is a "+favorites" button in the image description box (assuming you actually want to know how to do it and are not just suggesting to add it to the FAQ's)
