The odd one out

Good morning

A small query on something that has puzzled me. All the image sizes from 640x480 to 1600x1200 are at the standard ratio, except the 1280x1024. When I view an image at this size it always appears squashed horizontally and with black strips down the sides as a result. To be at the same ratio as the others it needs to be 1280x960. Is there a reason for this difference?

Despite the slightly different aspect ratio, 1280x1024 is much more common on PCs because of the significance of the number 1024. As you can easily verify 2^10=1024, and it is easier for computer designers to do things in powers of 2 due to the underlying binary system of logic that computers are based on. I think that it is just more efficient from a hardware design point of view.

Your best bet for getting the image to fit on your screen nicely is to take the 1600x1200 pixel image and scale it down to your screen size.

Good morning
Thanks Caedes. I have been doing as per your suggestion, or where 1280x1024 is the largest, choosing one size smaller. Your post nicely explains the reasons.
