I'm just an amateur photographer.I don't have the money for all the high tech cameras. I just enjoy taking and sharing photos. I dare anyone to get as close to the foxes I take pics of, with a point and shoot... No super zoom lenses. This is nature close up and personal. If you think I'm a hack just tell me and I'll stop posting. the only reason i still post is for the friends I've found here but they are few and far between.

I'm confused.. I don't know what your problem is Thomas.. your fox pics are lovely and you get quite a few comments..

There is nothing wrong with using a point and shoot camera they do a good job, you don't need an expensive camera to capture a great shot, it's up to the photographer to make the most of the out of the subject.. and from the look of your gallery you know how to do that.

All my pictures are taken with a P&S as I cannot be bothered to lug around large DSLR cameras in a bag. The fact that you take your fox pictures so close is what makes them so good. This is reflected in the CI which I see ranges a little from 80 downwards but seems fair. Like Jacqueline, I am confused as to what you are saying. Keep posting, keep taking pictures, it is the only way to learn and improve. I would suggest that you might try to format your pictures more for desktops, that is 4:3 format or similar, so that people might download them more. And do not worry about the lack of comments, I don't.

Hi Tom, at first reading of your comment, I assumed that someone had given you some critique that was less than praising. It must of got you all fired up, and by God you just are not going to accept this type of critique. Wanting to defend our contributors, I thought, Aint no-one going to give crap to one of our members, So I did a little private eye snooping. I went to your gallery and viewed ALL your photos. I saw nothing that I would be ashamed of or upset about. I thought all your pictures were good. Then I read all your comments, hoping to root out the creep that upset you. Nothing! All the comments seemed to be positive. Hmmm...I did notice one thing, but never gave it a second thought. I came back here to reread your post, thats when I saw it. "Ci index" now I can see what upset you so. I noticed that the CI scores on your pictures were lower than they deserved. Now it all seemed to fall into place! Lots of Photographers on this site get upset over undeserved low CI scores. My only comment there is "get over it" we all have gone thru this, and eventually we all have gotten over it. Its not like the CI score determines if you have a positive or negative Photographic skills. We all know the scoring system is flawed, but it gives some idea of what is popular and what is not. What I could not understand is your comment on the value of DSLR over a P&S. Every camera has a limit of capabilities, and a specific purpose. But the value of the photo produced is determined by the style and skill of the Photographer. So Tom, I am going to throw you and anyone else that reads this a challange. Thake a picture of a Green Pepper. One to be taken with a DSLR and one with a P&S. Post them both, I be betting that you will notice no difference. Except unless you place the photo on a Billboard 30 feet tall by 50 feet long, then you may notice some difference. Keep up the good work my friend. Be proud of what you produce and dont let anyone or anything like the CI score, grow any doubt in you. :)

I'm sorry I ever said any thing.I vote on others pics myself. What I can't understand is how someone can vote a one on anyone's pics. After all just 1 one can totally tank the ci index. Why would anybody want to do that? You're asking people to post pics and put themselves up to public scrutiny. To me a one vote is just pure malice. Who would want to even post if the members weren't more positive on the voting? I've always tried to give people a positive in my voting, while I'm not the best photographer I still know what I like and I vote that way.

Thomas you can upload pics so that people don't vote on them if that would help.. all you have to do is untick the box where it says about voting booth when you upload

Tom, you have great and very unique images in your gallery - some of the scores are below what I would have voted but I agree with what has been said, the C-index often is not a reliable indication of the value of any image. Some types of images, especially in photography galleries are more popular than others and they tend to score higher but there is also no doubt that many good images are scored low by some voters for reasons other than a considered fair evaluation. There appears to be those who take pleasure in rubbishing decent images with scores of zero and ones and twos. The reasons are known only to them and they are unlikely to divulge them. Rarely will there be a comment made by one of these voters explaining why they voted those numbers.

While loathe to get become in yet another discussion on this subject there is something that upsets me as much as the practice of malicious voting - and that is being considered a 'moaner' and thin-skinned not to be able to cope on a personal level with low scores. I believe that those who have expressed concern are more concerned about the abuse of the voting system and the effect that has on the site as a whole, rather than their own c-index scores.
I have stuck with the voting system until now because I think it is a useful indication for individuals and as a sorting sytem for the galleries - when used responsibly, and can be an encouragement to improve especially for newer members. Like everyone else, I am pleased to get a high score and like most others accept and take heed of lower ones, and look to see where they failed and how improvements can be made. However, I think the time is fast approaching when I will not be putting my images up for evaluation because like you Tom, I do not need or like the insults of zero votes and ones on images that do not deserve them.

Keep posting your photos and do not be discouraged :)

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust

If you have not seen this discussion Voting Zero You may feel better after reading it all. In any case being angry with the Ci is nothing new.

Good news is those way out of line votes do not get factored into the C-index period. It is not a straight average of all votes.

On top of that it is only a subjective number based on the subjective opinions of a random group of people who may or may not care. Or who may have mental problems beyond the ability of this community to repair.

Blow it off. Be your own judge and remember - you can't fix stupid. Stupid is as stupid does.

Not sure if you use or have an image editing program/software at your disposal, Tom.

If not? Here you go:

"PhotoFiltre 6.5.1 "

/\ Freeware, btw. And there are others. This one is suggested as it is quite powerful and a number of members on the site here do use it.

One other thing I might suggest (if you have not already discovered such) is to take a look at your camera's manual and search out the functionality/option of; "Exposure Compensation".

Quite helpful and useful when facing challenging lighting conditions. Then, combined with the image editing software ... adjustments (if needed) can be made.

That said..

Keep shooting and happy shooting. I've enjoyed your up close and personal shots of the fox family. :o)

Most point & shoots have a built in guide all you have to do is turn the dial to that and scroll down to what your looking for eg. night shots, background light etc and it sets it for you..

I find too a lot of helpful tips in the photography discussions on here too
