You know it sort of makes me madd when you go through the trouble to make an image and all they want to do is down load it with out making a comment. If your going to look, at least tell us what you think and at least vote on the image. I've tried to stay out of the site politics lately. But come on people! We can't inprove with out an occasional critic.

Indeed. Gets annoying when multiple images are free of comment or vote. Enhance your Calm.

I agree it is annoying. It is also annoying when you do make a comment, and don't get an acknowlegment. Maybe we need could all use a few lessons in manners

personally, i think its kinda dumb when you make a comment, then someone just says right back, thanks for the comment. seriously, it could be an automated system doing that, just like most of the comments on most images. unless something is fantastic, i usually dont comment unless i have a bit of advice, or maybe a question about it. i'd expect questions to be answered, but otherwise acknowlegment of comments is a waste of time, i'd rather if that person would go into my gallery and comment, than leave something in my personal info. just my 2cents

It is a matter of manners. When someone gives you a gift, you tell them thank you. A comment IS a gift. Thank you IS in order. How do I know if you have even bothered to read the comment, if you don't reply. Remember, good manners will get you nice things in this world.

maybe, but the expectation that you WILL get thanks, when there are other people who wont bother doesnt seem to do anyone much good either ;)

Just because they don't have good manners doesn't excuse you.

manners are all about expectations. we dont bow to eachother when we meet, yet some places that would be expected. people here have many varied expectations, and will act accordingly. i think people should do what they would expect others to do for them, yet i think it isnt good to take offence when someone has, and acts according to different ideas of 'manners'

Somewhere I think you got things backwards. The rule is "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.".

i think thats what i said. people just dont necessarily expect people to do certain things, so they dont expect they should have to either. anyways...i think this argument has gotten a little pointless now, so here to all of you that i havent thanked for comments.

THANKS
:)

Id have to agree with carl. When i comment on a picture i could care less if people respond thanking me for their comment, and i definitly don't think its rude if they don't. If i ask a question say something that merits a response then it is definitly good if they respond, but if i say, "I like this shot, the colors you captured really come out. Maybe next time try and do blah blah better" then i don't think it is rude at all if they don't say thank you. If they are standing beside their picture in a gallery and i said something then they should acknowldge it, but this is the internet, not a gallery. Manners are different.

I agree with Carl
I agree with Morwyn in that you should "do unto others as you would have them to do you"
I dont expect to receive thanks for any comment I give, therefore I dont give out thanks.
When I do respond to a comment, its for good reason
A. The comment was very insightful or constructive
B. The comment was a question
C. The user has been nice enough to comment on a great many of my recent images, I will give them a thank you for commenting on all of them.
I think its interesting that you call a comment a *gift* but then get annoyed when you dont recieve any. Not much of a gift if you are not only practically demanding them, but also expecting something in return no?
I comment on images that hit me in some way, good or bad or in between. If it makes me stop for more than a second, I comment. When I upload a picture and it does not recieve any commentary, I dont hold a grudge against the members of the site. I simply take that as a sign that the image either needs work, doesnt grab enough attention, or isnt the right type of image for a desktop wallpaper gallery. The members can tell me alot by saying nothing. If your image is truly deserving of commentary, then commentary it shall recieve - I promise.

People shouldn't have to thank members for commenting on their image. After all, they have gone to the trouble of making the image and posting it without expecting anything in return, isn't leaving a comment just thanking them for their trouble? Otherwise where does it end; should I thank someone for thanking me for leaving a comment on their image??? Couldn't that also be considered just good manners? If you want to comment, then do so. If you want to thank people for commenting, then do so. But neither should be done out of obligation, then it just becomes meaningless; sort of like the "Have a nice day" you get at the supermarket.

Which is why gentlemen, I rarely give out comments on your work even if I like it. I still say it is good manners to say thank you, but maybe it is because I am so much older than all of you.

Good morning

My own opinion is that whether I get a comment, nice as it may be, it is not a concern or an issue. I have said in another thread - I check my Caedes Control each day, not for the c-Index, but purely to see how many views and downloads an image has. That is the best indicator, to me anyway, of an images' popularity. As an example, I have an image that has received zero comments and only one vote, yet has been viewed 18 times and downloaded 14 times. Am I happy with this? You betcha (to borrow from fotobob <grinning>) - it has only been uploaded in the last few days, and the ratio of views to downloads are an excellent comment all on their own. Even if this image is deleted from Caedes at the end of 30 days or so, I am still happy with the result.

I don't comment on every image I look at - there is not enough time, and often I cannot think of anything to say - there is still too much I do not know. But I do vote on every image I download.

Comments that I value most on my own images are those that show me how my work can be improved, whether saying "did your try this" or "like the way you did that". Even one saying a simple "I liked this" tells me I did something right (but what is left for me to puzzle out <chuckling>). For every comment I get, I will acknowledge that comment, and where possible add a little that either tells more about the image or more about me (or both). Someone here has a signature that talks about an image capturing a moment in time, and my intent is that by doing this it helps that person to identify a little more with that moment in time - if they wish, they are free to ignore it as well.

Manners? I don't do things because it is manners or not. That is living my life by other peoples standards, and we can each only live our life by the standards we set for ourselves (even if some of them are borrowed from the "prevailing norm"). I do things for this reason. That is what guides me, not another persons opinion of what I should or should not do. Sometime I fail and determine to do better next time. Sometimes I succeed, and note for future reference what I did so that can repeat it again.

Ok, for what it's worth, that's my two bits worth.

Enjoy your day

Romane

Well guys I look at it this way. There is a comment section for a reason. Its ment to be used for constructive insite, yes even if it means you may be a little tuff on the artist. But its not meant for on line terrorisim.

I expect a thank you for comments that I make. For example, you are showing your work at an exhibit. I walk up and remark on certain aspects of your work. Do you ignore me or say thank you? I would be grateful for a thank you. It is just the right thing to do. This is quite different from customer service;-)

Interesting discussion, I mainly agree on what Carl, Anthony and Romane (extremely eloquently put as always ^_^) say. I agree to some point it's nice to acknowledge good comments but there are people that do this in very strange ways. If they get, say 10 comments from me on different images then they say ten, rather pointless "Thanks for the comment", ten times in a row on my user page. What's the deal with that?

Pointless I said. Mind-numbingly boring and a bit silly too if I may be so bold to say what I think... Is it just a question of gathering "karma" or what?

I think it's better to comment back on the thread under the image in question as a rule. Many don't do this and maybe don't even consider it a proper "thank you" if it's not on that users page (since most don't subscribe to threads of other peoples images I guess, and thus misses the comment). Maybe in the case above I'd rather thank in a single post on the user info page of the commenting party or in a PM. On occasion on a good comment I answer fully under the image thread and partly on the user page and pointing them in the direction of my full answer.

The reason for me answering on the thread under the image is simple (but I may be wrong about it I guess...) The possibility to share advice or other interesting facts or ideas are considerably more difficult if the question/comment and answer is not in the same place. Especially since it's the good comments that deserve answers is the ones that perhaps other could benefit the most from. I sometimes find it utterly frustrating not to be able to know how the artist reacted to an interesting comment or advice.

BTW, I do not always comment but I feel I'm doing my share in that respect anyhow. I do however vote on more then 90% of the images I see in full view ("download"). The ones I don't vote on are usually such pieces I didn't care for at all and would have rated so poorly that I don't feel like doing it. I feel it would be mean somehow. ^_^ Maybe it's just me.

Cheers,
Klas

I fullheartedly agree with the original sentiment of this thread. I comment whenever I can think of anything to say. Speaking of manners- Sometimes I am impressed with how bad or pointless an image is and I can't think of anything Nice to say so I just dont... this is good right? haha. Wow, this is a long thread of comments about comments...

If I check out images, I always vote on them. I make comments when I appreciate an image. If comments are made on my image I thank people for their comments. Most of the time it is indeed 'Thanks for the comment on.....' but where necessary I will say more if their comment requires it. It is just common courtesy on my part.
