What smaller format are you looking for? What video programs do you have? How much do you love compression artifacts?

Answer these questions and you may get more help.

I use Adobe Premiere 5.1 and i want a format that i can use to send over internet without taking so much space...The quality is not so important as long as it is possible to see what goin on...Its just for brainstorming between me and a friend.

Doesn't premiere have compression settings? Is it still to big if you put it at highest compression and leave it as an avi?

I had some AVI's that I couldn't view on my Mac, I used this app to convert them to a different AVI format so they would work: http://www.flydragonsoft.com/avi-mpg-converter.htm
...I didn't actually do this but I am pretty sure you can dictate the size and quality of the conversion to make the file size smaller. The app lets you have a certain number of trials before they make you pay for it. Hope it might help...

If you have windows xp, windows movie maker (in the accessories folder) is very easy to use and will open the avi and encode to a wmv file, standard for the internet. The compression on these is very good, and you can set it to encode for quality or even set a max file size.

Much more difficult, but much more powerful, is virtualdub. You may need to find and install your own codecs depending on what is already installed on your system. There are many tutorials which explain how to use this program if you google around, such as this one.
