Why can't everyone vote?

I am seeing multiple people expressing displeasure with the current limited voting pools and stating that, because of it, they will no longer enter the contests.

I thought that I was going to get to vote in the last contest, only to discover that I couldn't participate because I hadn't been invited.

I WANTED to participate. I have a voice. I had commented on each and every entry. And I pay for a membership to support and be involved in Caedes. So I found it frustrating to be told that I wasn't allowed a vote without an invitation.

Who chooses who gets to vote? Why limit voters? Why can't anyone who wants to vote?

Lisa, I may be wrong but I think the voters are chosen from those who enter the contest and gather a minimum number of votes in sequential contests.

The contest is set by an algorithm that *caedes programmed several years ago.

If I am wrong, hopefully, someone will provide the correct answer.

The program *caedes wrote chooses who gets to vote not anyone on the site.

I hope this helps.

Yes, Mimi, that was my understanding as well. The only times I've been invited to judge was after one of my images garnered a placing in the top five in a previous contest. The problem I have with the contests is that about half the time, many voters select "pretty" over theme. I've been banging my head on that particular wall for years... it's nothing that anything can be done about, so I guess I just don't care to bang my head any longer.

This was posted by *caedes in 2010 in response to a similar question. It probably is still in effect.

"The voters for each contest are chosen among the people who have entered one of the last 4 contests and received at least 5 votes total in those contests. If you are chosen as a voter, you will get a special PM that will link to the voting page."

I am thinking that it is this way to encourage members to participate in the contests by awarding voting rights to those that do.

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust

Ah, I see that now. That would explain the thinking.

On the other hand... if more people were given the option to vote, I wonder if that in itself would draw more interest?

Thank you to everyone who jumped in here, especially mimi who braved it first!

I assumed that this same inquiry had been addressed before, Lyn, but I couldn't find a discussion on it. So ... here we be!

While I understand the rationale of who is chosen, I think it is a shame to limit the caedes members participation in that way.

I, for one, find it difficult to enter contests. Not because I can't come up with an idea or create an artwork, but because the rules state that I can't make a contest submission unless I have already submitted ANOTHER artwork SINCE the contest was announced. So for each entry, I have to make two submissions.

That is an issue for me, because I have precious little time to work on my art as it is.

So that disqualifies me from being able to enter most contests.

But that aside, to say that my feedback has value (I hope) on everyday submissions and on contest entries, but that I am then not worthy as a voter because I haven't recently entered a contest seems ludicrous to me.

I want to vote. I want to participate.

Why are contest entries being held as the measure of worthiness for a voting voice? Aren't site submissions more telling of a person's interest and involvement with caedes? If a person is regularly submitting their work to the caedes site and exchanging feedback with the membership, doesn't that in itself state their desire to participate and share in this wonderful world that we call caedes?

I think that the contests should be open to anyone who wants to vote.

I believe the rules were made when the membership was much higher and therefore more appropriate. I understand your concern Laura. Why don't you post in Feature bloat/Bug Squash. It may get more attention there.
I believe only *caedes himself could change the system.

I was of the understanding that the criteria for submitting an entry in a contest was that it must be created after the contest subject is announced. I don't understand the two submission requirement you mention. Your most recent work should be there on the drop down list for contest entries and be able to be selected .. perhaps I am missing something here ? Apologies if I am :)

Hmm ... You know what, Lyn? Maybe I have misunderstand the contest rules all this time? It states (I'm paraphrasing) that you have to be logged in and have submitted an image since the contest was announced, in order to enter.

Since it says that you have to have submitted "an image" instead of saying "your contest entry image", I took that to mean that I had to have submitted a previous image.

But ... maybe not?!

Huh!

And I am sure that only *Caedes can change the rules. And maybe it would be a gigantic hassle to do so. I don't know? But I think it's worth consideration. If nothing else, I hope he will be flattered that his members are not an apathetic lot and we want to participate in the fun of the contest votes too. :)

Anyway, that's my two-cent's worth. Thank you all for the discussion. Much appreciated!

The current "Breaking the Rules" contest is a sure sign of the decline in member participation... eight entries total... eight. Oy vey!
