As I've scoured through the bounty of photos that Caedes has on display, I've come to a conclusion. There is quite a goodly pool of talented shutterbugs here and consequently there are some gorgeous photos to be seen. I also don't want to leave out the amazing computer artists and their wonderful pieces. The flower photography is brilliant. marilynjane, neez, photobob, jacked, and photoimagery have contributed some truly stunning pics. (BTW, marilynjane, where do you live to get so many great flower shots. Do you reside in a glasshouse? =) ) There's a million fantastic sunsets, scads of majestic mountains, stacks of ethereal computer generated works, and of course I can't ignore the slushy heap of effusive puppy and kitty photos. =)
However, there is one thing that seems to be lacking. I'll put my answer in the form of a question (Alex Trebek eat your heart out). Where are all the people? It is my opinion that there is no more interesting of a subject to be photographed than humans, and I know I'm not alone in that belief. Dear photographers: Do the humans in your life dematerialize as soon as you begin handling a loaded camera? =P
In short, may I request more people pictures? Faces, elbows, feet, ears, singles, couples, groups, crowds, mobs, pretty, ugly, young, old, smiling, laughing, crying, running, walking, sitting... whatever. Lets here it for homo sapien sapiens! (and yes, its suppposed to be 'sapien sapiens', not just a single 'sapien')
BTW, I forsee that I could be labeled as a hypocrite for not uploading any shots of people. Listen, when I get a camera, I'll contribute. Rumor has it that cameras cost money... which is a substance that I'm not very familiar with right now. =P I'm looking into a good digital camera and/or a Leica M7, neither of which will magically appear at my command. Actually I have a 30 year old Russian Zenith camera, but... welllll, I'd rather have a digital camera first so I can hone my skills without worrying about paying 20 bucks a pop to develop a role of film. ANYway, I'm digressing too far.
In closing, I'll reiterate my request. Let's see more people, please.
Just checked the people gallery and wow there are 111 images there to look at and comment on. It is slower than the other galleries but looks to be coming along nicely:-)
I think quiet often pictures of people haven't rated all that well on this site as it is supposed to be a desktop gallery. I definitly agree with you about that needing to change though. Pictures of people have so much to look at.
"A piece of toast with butter always lands butter side down, and a cat always lands on its feet. What happens if a piece of toast is tied butter side down to the back of falling cat? Does it hover above the ground in perpetual indecision?"
well more often than not my images are based on the human form! but then i post in the photomanipluation gallery which resides in the darkest grimiest corner of caedes! i would post my work in the people gallery but i really cant stop grouping my self by process!
Somehow I find it strange that this being primarily a desktop picture site would tend to discourage pictures of people. Personally, I find that shots of people are some of the most fascinating to have on one's desktop. Here are a few examples from photo.net:
and here is one of my all time, hands down, no contest favorite desktop pictures of all time. Are you ready for this? This'll knock yer optical orbs out:
Before anyone gives me any flak, I am very aware that photo.net is a _photography_ site and not a _desktop pict_ site. The point remains the same, however. Pictures of people are very good as desktop pictures. So, not to sound whiney, but... could we see more shots of bipeds? Please? *sniffles* =P
Okay... does anyone have any thoughts or shots to contribute?
ebjo: Irrelevant. View the photos that I linked to in the previous post. I have no clue who those people are, but they still look darn cool on my desktop! =)
Agreed, but I wouldn't call your examples people shots. they are way more artistic than just people shots or should I say snapshots of ones kids ,family or friends.
It's more than just 'biped' shots. It's something with some human interest. Something that might cause you to think as you go about your daily computer tasks. The firefighter shot is great in that way. (Especially for me who is looking into becoming a firefighter.)
Ebjo brings up a good point about artistic shots. It causes me to stop and consider what I mean by a 'shot'. I grew up with a part-time photographer and so those shots at photo.net don't seem like anything so special. Those kind of shots were just normal for me to see. Maybe what my eyes see as 'normal' is actually very artistic. Maybe my standards are a bit high. Oh well. I hope this isn't causing a misunderstanding.
In short, I have a personal enjoyment for looking at pictures of people, and its kinda nice to see people when you're frobbing around on a cold, lifeless computer.
P.S. I'll refrain from using my facetious term of 'biped shots' and henceforth use a more appropriate term like 'human interest' shots or some such title.
For me anyway, I believe the lack of humanistic art is because most of the community is digital artists. And in order to create the human form in a digital medium is quite a task and as a result happens only rarely.
As for photography, most of the time people in a picture detracts from the photograph itself unless they are placed somewhat carefully and doing something that as mayne replied 'tell a story'. All the careful planning is something that the average photographer (like me, not that I have any in my gallery) wants to do.
I've for awhile been trying to put more 'humanity' into my works...we'll see...hasn't happened yet.
Personally I would feel quite uncomfortable as an amateur asking anyone to pose for me... I don't even like to take photos when there are people around, it makes me feel self concious... with landscapes, flowers etc. I don't have to ask for permission! Not that I don't agree that people shots can be great, but maybe this will help explain why there aren't so many here on caedes?
i agree with sam. Walking downtown and such i have seen some people that i thought could make very interesting shots, but have been to chicken to just take one or ask them if i could take one. Maybe if i ever get a long lens ill do it so they can't tell but till then its hard.

Haha, thanks Sam for getting me out of the closet. I tend to shy away from people seeing me take photos as well...just thought I was wierd haha I guess not. What wierdo would lye on the ground trying to get a picture of some insignificant fungus let alone an image of a human. Maybe a National Geographic logo on a t-shirt would get us on the road an boost our confidence...could be fun;-)
lol, Darryl! Good idea with the NG t-shirt! ^_^ I share that feeling and inclination for keeping to myself when shooting... (BTW I checked those photo.net images and I must say that they are truly amazing and certainly very artistic as you came to conclude yourself Hematoma.) I would not mind seeing good "human interest" shots here but I'm not good at all on those. Like Sam, MiLo and Darryl I'm too uncomfortable shooting around people to begin to learn the art of capturing humans in an artistic way.
The shots you linked to are beautiful. I've seen a few good ones flow through Caedes as well, but I think you're right - there is a dearth of "human interest" photos here. Maybe it's the "avoid the snapshot" syndrome that's been cultivated here (which, by the way, I agree with - I'm really not interested in people's snapshots - only those that have true artistic merit). It's not my area of expertise, but I wouldn't mind seeing more of them, especially if they're as good as the ones you linked to.

Thanks for listening and thanks in advance.
