Just been looking through the last dozen or so pages of new image submissions and hardly anyone seams to be commenting on anything - most images having either no comment at all or a couple at most. There always appears to be plenty of people online so is it a case of apathy or things just getting lost in a constant wave of new images...
I usually look at images which are a day old in order to get an idea of the number of comments on average. Starting at roughly page 10 (12 images per page) you'll see a pretty clear correlation between image quality and the number of comments. Obviously the less popular images could use some C&C, but I'm not sure how we can get people to comment on images that they don't like.
sometimes I think that there is alot of "popularity contests" on caedes, and there are a few people that almost always get quite a lot of comments (even if I believe neglected images are "better"). I don't know, I try to comment as much as I can, but I need to get a new modem :\
I enjoy very much commenting..and of course I do like to hear from people also.....but I too have noticed people are pretty general lately. Maybe they are busy in the summer months..or dont have enough energy left after a day of work//fun...etc..I like the idea of appreciating any comment. SOme people say it short, some long..but I DO think it is lovely when "true critique" is given...bad or good, I like it.
I hope it's part of a natural curve in the busy summertime (here in the northern hemisphere) Everybody seems to have a lot to share because it's all about going and doing but folks aren't sticking around to scan through all the images.
As for myself I missed a week which put me back about fifty pages. I've worked my way bck up to starting around page twenty or so. I hope to get to where I can start around page ten soon.
Got to agree, if you miss a day or two, you find yourself 1 or 2 pages behind (36 images a page). Then you comment on images that really stand out, and catch up at a later date. There's always going to be "popularity" as there are many good friends here at caedes. The images that do get comments seem to be by the same people, the one's in this discussion!
I think in the end though that the cream will always rise to the top, some how!
Anyway if you don't get the recognition first time round you can always repost:-) !??!!?!?!
I have found if you want comments on your own images, you have to take the time to comment on others, and to say thank you, when someone comments on yours.. It really doesn't take that long.. Even with dialup..
Well ,some people may have a border around their life so they just cant catch up with voting and comments and i think thats fine..Internet shouldnt take too much of our lifes and it makes you damn stiff when ur over 40 ;-)
I agree with the fact that sometimes commenting takes time and summer does make it harder to spent that much amount of time on caedes. i try to comment as much as I can, but don't always have as much time as i would like to do so. :0))!
I agree with all that was said. I try my best to comment on as many images as possible, but as stated before....if you miss a few days (many of us try to hold down jobs), you find yourself overwhelmed with new images, and unfortunately they end up getting overlooked by me unless, of course, they end up in the TNIs, and then I comment on them. That's just the way it goes I guess?
Wow, Morwyn, you comment on a stunning amount of images for you being on dialup. Congrats to you!
Summer months are getting busy...but usually a few days out of a week I'll comment on as many images as possible. It gets to be pretty funny, as sometimes I'll be on a comment spree at the same time as Ann, and we'll end up having our comments one after another on whole pages of images.
Clayton has a good point...with the ever increasing numbers here, who can possibly comment on everything...also, speaking for myself, I have recently been trying to take more time over each image I view so as to offer a more thoughtful commentary, rather than worrying so much about the number of images I view and perhaps having to resort to a quick "great work" type of remark which has also been a criticism on recent discussion boards...let's face it, you can't please everyone...I also think there are times, especially if you are a frequent or long time user of the site, where you can suffer from a little apathy or burn out...you view images and just feel at a loss what to say, having done it so many times before...personally, I wouldn't be too concerned though...it's probably a combination of things, a kind of ebb and flow, where in time the pace will pick up again.:Pat.
This has been an ongoing problem for a long time. I remember the time when you could be absent for days and still come back and vote and comment on every image. We have so many uploads now that it is not possible to look at all but a tiny fraction of them and still give them any quality evaluation.
"The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts." Bertrand Russell
I only comment on the images that grab my attention either in a positive sense or negative. The middle of the road sort of average images are not blessed with my comments as they used to be. The reasons are several, too many uploads, lack of time and server lag. Plus, I feel my time is best spent on the best and the worst. I can be a bit harsh as many of you know. But my critique is always meant in the best way, to push people to better work. I expect the same.
I actually do the same thing, if an Image looks average, than it's probably just another image I've seen a thousand times and really doesn't draw my attention. I also try to critique if I think it will be helpful at all.
DigitalFX: I don't think your comments are harsh at all. I think that the atmosphere that was created on Caedes.net just contrasts critique so much, that someone giving suggestions might look *almost* like an insult because we are so used to getting "good jobs", etc. I think it really benefits to give good criticism, it really helped me when I got plenty of criticisms..
