Image Deletes

I've recently had two image deletes I greatly disagree with. One had a c-index of 86, the other somewhere between 78 and 80. Both had fairly high views, downloads and votes. I don't get why they were deleted. I know one of them had several comments. I imagine the other did as well, but I hadn't viewed it recently enough before it was deleted to by positive.

I thought photographs were accepted as permanent caedes material based on comments, votes, and c-index. Why is it two images with high rating were rejected but my first image to ever get past the "new images" category only had a rating of 76 ("Woods and Stream"). It know has an 80, but not at the time. It also had viewer comments than my image with an 86. On top of all that I never really even thought it was all that great.

Why are my good images being deleted?

From the FAQs:

"Why did my image disappear from the site?

There is no promise that we will keep every image that is uploaded to the site. We try to keep every image for a minimum one month. If an image has been on the site for more than a month, we will make a decision on whether or not to keep it. The objective being to highlight the best images that are uploaded and to make room on the server for new images. If we did not do this the good images would be too difficult to find and the server would be too expensive for us to afford."

As has been throughly discussed before, images that go to the permenant gallery are moved solely at the artistic discretion of the mods. There is no cut and dry formula.

It seems as though going by high c-indexes would be a little more fair. I've hated images that I've seen on the front page, but they have huge reponses. I don't think it'd be fair to put my opinion down as the only one that matters, but rather it'd be fair to put the group first. Not that a moderators opinion doesn't matter. It just shouldn't factor in at certain times, ie 86 c-indexes with large responses.

Perhaps if this site were a democracy some kind of formula along those lines would be more in order, but...

I've had the same thing happen to me Michael. Some of (what I thought were) my better images were removed. After reading several posts such as this....I realized that it happens to everyone here. It's nothing personal. =0)

I think that all images should be deleted after a certain amount of time ... the better the image the longer it stays, but at some point it would be deleted too. It would make for fresher galleries and have everyone looking for new material.

Just out of curiosity, do images now have to be deleted by mods manually or if they get overlooked for long enough are they deleted by some automatic expiration? I just had a couple go in the 80s too that I thought would probably survive since I hadn't seen anything like them on Caedes before. Namely, (Warm & Cozy) and maybe even (Forgotten), both deleted yesterday I think. I also noticed four got deleted in the course of about two days and I think they were all uploaded in the course of two days so I wondered if some sort of automatic expiration was triggered. Any mods know about this or is it all choose and delete?

Maybe as an appeasement for people, some sort of function could be built in where members were notified automatically that their image was scheduled for deletion and give them say 48 hours to download it back if they hadn’t kept an original on their own disk. I guess this applies to people like myself who are too disorganised to keep copies of everything they upload here and then have mental blanks trying to recall what if anything has been axed from the galleries.

Good thinking Phil. I believe I suggested something like that a while back but I don't recall the discussion. I thought it would be nice if people had a chance to save the comments that had been made on it, and for those who really care, even check the commenters' favorites galleries to let them know to save to their HD if they had it in there. Beyond that it just takes the guess-work out of what's been deleted. When I have more free time I will begin constructing a gallery on my own website for the stuff that I like that didn't make the perma galleries, so it would be nice to know when an image is getting the axe. I don't remember if I or someone else ever posted the suggestion on the dev site. I guess that would probably be a good idea but I usually wait for Caedes's nod of approval before I even do that.

Agreed,the notification sounds good.

But, on the subject of how judging what images going into the permanent galleries should only be based on c-index...I can't say I agree with it.

No one here votes identically, some are more realistic, some won't score an image below a 6. If everyone voted the same,c-index as a sole representaion of the image's quality might work out. But we don't vote the same.

I for one am satisfied with the moderators judging images, and this is coming from a noob here with about 6 images deleted. I don't mind,as I know most of what I take doesn't compare with the vetearns of this community. But if I get one suggestion on how to make my photography better, then it is worth it, and I don't hold any anger towards it's deletion.

Flowers, fractals and terragen images are tougher to get into the permanent galleries.... also an image can have a c-index of 90 but only a couple dozen views, (maximum image size really effects the amount of views and downloads).... and some images just don't make good desktop wallpapers.
Us Image Moderaters have images that don't make the permanent galleries... and yes, even caedes himself has had images that didn't make the cut.

I was going to suggest a notification-type deal, but after the way my city/town category idea got shot down, I decided against it.

Anyway, there should be some sort of threshold; a number a user hits that permanently lands their image on caedes.net. 10 votes and a c-index of 85. I think that's very reasonable. You know you've most likely got a lot of varied, fair votes in there and it's highly ranked. I think 88:100 would be the highest point to set, though. Anything higher is very difficult to obtain. Likewise, 84 would be the lowest, but I think that's giving too much credit. And this isn't to say something with a c-index of 79 couldn't be allowed in. A mod would just have to make the choice.

The problem with using c-index to determine what gets into the permenant galleries is that it just encourages cheating, which we already know has happened in the past. With the incentive of a garanteed place in the perms, the cheats would try even harder to come up with ways to flaunt the system.

2 of my lowest rated images were placed in the permanent galleries. They were seriously less than a c-index of 85. They were obviously liked.

I've seen some make a perm gallery still get the axe. It's understandable that images are not garanteed a perm place on the site but i'm sure several have breathed easier seeing something get to a perm gallery then get that funky quesation mark above their heads when one goes away.

It's understandable that space is at a premium so only the strongest will survive I'm just wondering about the permenence of the perm galleries. i had a couple in favs that I found in those galleries that are no longer available.....

I just lost a couple weeks ago an image that had a c-index of 89. It was similar to two others I had done, and it is quite popular on other sites. The reason it was deleted I'm sure is that there was already similar work on the server, and space is limited. It's OK though, because the mods have to make these (sometimes tough) decisions daily. Go easy on them. They are your friends, trust me.

Don't forget they are a lot of new images, day after day. It's a big job to look, vote, comment and move! Fortunately Caedes gived to us some tools to look at the galleries by age, author, c-index, vote, downloads, ... But you've to understand that we are no supermen and it's possible we missed some very good images...
Agree with Samatar: c-index is not a good creterion, just another data.
I posted a new forum on the 'Photography discussion board', called Wonderful, but no succes... I tried to keep your attention on beautiful and artistic photos. We would like to see more of them on caedes.net! Take your cams, guys!!! :-)
