just started photoshop. only been doing it for a while. how do i do lightning effects? i have cs. hope somebody out there is willing to help the new guy

You need to buy/borrow/steal a plugin called (strangely enough) "Lightning". I think it's made by KPT or something.

One suggestion, although it is great fun to play with plugins, you might want to concentrate on getting the basics worked out first. PS is such a powerful app with so many features, but you need to know how to use it before you can take advantage. Have you checked the tutorials gallery yet?

yes, i have checked out the tutorials. extremely helpful. i did not download any plugins, although i plan to, but created my own lightning effects using the tutorial tbob posted. ty very much. i think that will be the first piece of work of mine worthy of posting.

Here's a tip. When you start fooling around with layers, note that they can be composited in different ways. Experiment with trying each one to see how they work.
