How can I...

I posted an image tonight, Blue-Green Spiral. On my desktop, it's sharp and saturated and detailed. When it was uploaded to Caedes, however, it lost everything that I thought made it a good image: it's blurry, muted and the details run together. It was uploaded at 1600x1200, so it's not a resolution problem. What can I do in the future to ensure that the image I create is the image you see? I'll remove the image after a day or two, because I'm disappointed in the upload results. Thanks for any suggestions/answers.

Kat.

Check your color profile. sRGB is the standard profile for PCs. If you open the image in Photoshop or some similar software, it will allow you to convert it to the sRGB standard with minimal loss of color.

Given all the variables involved in different graphics programs, transferring files, etc., I'm wondering if the problem could be as simple as the fact that this image was created in Ultra Fractal, which is a 16-bit program. Getting the subtlety of those colors to translate into an 8-bit program is impossible. What do you think? I'm not an expert at computer graphics and there's a lot I don't know. I'm always willing to try and learn, though.

Hi Kat! I'm saving my images now as PNG files and uploading them that way. I've been quite pleased with how Caedes has converted them to JPG. Try that and see what happens.

Yes, you definitely don't want to save it as JPG before uploading. It will get JPEG compressed too many times. Try uploading as PNG and let us know if that does the trick.

Thanks for the responses. Most of my images are already uploaded as PNG files, the only exceptions being those which are anti-aliased...my computer only wants to save those as bitmaps. Blue-Green Spiral was uploaded as a PNG.

Well then I think that the difference is just that you are seeing what the JPEG algorythm does in order to reduce the file size. Fractals in general compress with noticable artifacts because they usually have extreme detail.

Is there any way to work around or with this fact to improve the uploaded quality of images? I wish there were a way to preview the site's version of the image before it's posted so that I could decide whether or not I like the final product. I only left this particular image on the site so that those who responded to my problem could see it if they wished. Now the whole thing may be moot, as people are actually downloading the silly thing. Who knew?

I would like to offer higher resolution and lower compression options, but we have a little problem of limited resources. Perhapse we could make it a Cadre bonus?

Hi Kat. I always assume that others know more than i do about most subjects, but I'll try to help you anyway. Most graphics programs have a way to adjust the amount of compression that the jpg algorithm uses when saving. I set all mine to "best quality" or whatever corresponds to it, and the software saves with no compression. Now our noble leader insists that, because his drivespace is not infinite we should limit our file sizes to something less than 800K. This means that before I upload I have to compress somewhat. Usually though it isn't noticeable in the resulting image. In fact everything in my gallery after about last August has been stored this way.

I'll try a few things and see if they help. I may be able to improve the final quality of some of my images thanks to the suggestions made here. We'll see. Regardless of whether or not I can upload future images to my satisfaction, thanks for the helpful input so far.

regmar: actually you have unwittingly given some very bad advice. When you upload an image, the server software recompresses the image as a JPEG in order to preserve disk space. It is generally a very bad to compress an image with JPEG more than once. That's why my suggestion for best results is to save and upload it as PNG. That way the image only gets JPEG-mutilated once.

Well...so much different information. I guess I'll pretty much keep doing what I'm doing. It seems that some images just survive the upload in better shape than others.

Thanks.

...Download multiple pixel dimension versions of the same image to accomodate the different screen sizes? I'm a newbie...and if I upload something I made in 800x600..that's it! Do I have to constantly update the wallpaper contribution one image at a time each day
until I have all the popular size categories...the upload system doesn't seem to allow me to upload more than one image, and it sure won't accept packaged files such as a zip...what am I not doing...or is this the only way to upload?

The site will make all the image sizes that are smaller than the size that you upload. Just upload the largest size image that you have. I think this is explained on the upload page, isn't it?

OK, I thought I had read in the rules some time back that we were to limit our upload sizes to 800K. Is that rule still in effect, or has it been rescinded. Should we just upload the best quality image we have and allow your software to make the file size adjustments for us? I have some pretty big (highly detailed) 1200 x 1600 images.

I automatically upload at 1600 x 1200, or if my fractals ended up sized oddly, the site program will resize them to the next compatible size. Then you have a multitude of sizes available for all different monitor resolutions.
