Color/brightness calibration progs?

So I have this awesome(in my mind) flame fractal that I want to post, but on six or seven different PCs I've wanted to upload on, it's looked different and less awesome than it does on my own personal PC. Would this just be my problem, or is there like a universaally accepted color and gamma profile that would help? By that I mean, is there something special that you fine fine folks do to calibrate your monitor to a "universal standard" type color profile.

Mostly because I really don't want to show this off until I can make it look the same on everybody's PC(ego++)

There are a few threads in these forums on color profiles, if you look through a few pages you should find some (or more likely some other more vigilant member will provide you with a link to them).

as a stop gap, make sure you set your monitor and image program profiles to sRGB which is what I believe most images on the net are displayed in....
