Hi all you experts from a floundering amateur. I am trying to resize a manilpulated photo to upload. It is 1752x1168. I have added a sphere in the centre of the pic and want it to stay spherical when resized to be acceptable to upload, but it always comes out distorted to an oval shape. I am about ready to abandon it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, bearing in mind I dont know much. I have been working with IrfanView and PSP8.
I wondered if I could somehow add a border each side horizontally and then resize but I am not sure how to do this.

The easiest and perhaps the only way to solve your problem would be to toss those borders on. How i often do it is, open a new file at 1600x1200 and then copy and paste the picture in there. Then resize that layer using the little squares in the corners. If you hold shift it will maintain the same aspect ratio as you resize, so you wont get that distortion. Good luck with your picture.

Its time for a new sig for me, so it is for sale. Any offers can be made via a message in my profile.

when resizing .. focus on one dimension or direction .. for example ..

if you wish to upload 1600x1200

change your width dimension to 1600 ... your height will now be 1067 (a little short of the required 1200)

(using irfanview) .. go to CANVAS size (under resample in the image menu) .. subtact 1067 from 1200 ... (=133) then divide that number in half (=66.5) and place each half in the "top side" + "bottom side" boxes of the canvas size interface

if, as is the case here, the number includes a fraction .. then give an extra boost to one side .. (ie .. 66 + 67)

the resulting dimensions of your image can be seen in the status bar of irfanview (at the bottom)

Thanks so much for the help - trying both methods. Not quite got it yet but will persevere.

When using PSP to resize make sure you have "Constrain proportions" turned on. This will prevent the image from ever becoming distorted.

I really appeciate all this help and have learnt a lot just by experimenting. I have compromised by resizing to 1024x768 and chopping off a bit either side. Not perfect but sphere is ok. Not sure I even like the pic any more - have seen too much of it lol
