It often happens. As I type this post there are no moderators of any kind. In fact, there's only me and Joost from the Cadre, never mind any of the great and holy mods.
However, this is not a commercial site. I don't think we can expect mods to be more or less permanently online. It can occasionally be frustrating if you are waiting for image approval, but it's not a big deal (well, not unless it's one of my images...)
