The Pony Express ran from April 3, 1860, until the transcontinental telegraph was completed in October, 1861. The Pony Express proved that the Central Route to California could be traveled all year. Part of this route would later be used by the transcontinental railroad. By keeping government lines of communication open, the Pony Express also help keep gold-rich California in the Union during the Civil War. The legend of the Pony Express has become a part of American folklore and a symbol of the courage and determination of the American spirit. (Taken from a plague by the statue)

For more information you can check here and here.

I added a couple of my own textures to give it this look. I believe I will add this to the current Technology contest. Thanks for any comments.

I wonder how often the pony express was waylaid by robbers or is that only Hollywood stories Tick? Wonderful image with fiery background. Good luck in the contest.

Most appealing image with the distinct traits of Wild West movies and/or characters perhaps. In general your narrative has been a complete surprise for me. After all I am from the other side of the water... LOL

Wonderful image Tick, I really like what you've done here. What interests me is the fact that The Pony Express only lasted for a year or so as it has entered into folklore of tv and films. Good luck inthe ccompetition.

I had no idea the postal union had such perks in their contract as horse riding lessons. A great looking image and nice capture Tick. A great dramatic background and nice post work on the image. Best of luck in the contest.
