This is the Truss Swing Bridge across the Missouri River between St. Joseph, MO and Elwood, Ks. Photo was taken on April 14, 2013. It was a rainy day and I was unable to find a spot where I could shoot up the river. You can see other shots and obtain information about the bridge here. Since Prof Knik lives a ways upstream from here, I thought he might be interested in this shot. It was used mainly for the Union Pacific railroad and I believe it has been abandoned and is left open. The photo is nothing special, just a shot of our history.

Very cool shot, SOT...great angle and lines and kudos to you for dismissing the rain and perhaps? the possibility a train may come along...somehow the dismal weather fits quite well with the subject matter...good work!

I think this turned out really good, such a good lead in, and I suspect people can use it for a walkway by the looks of the bridge on the left.

An interesting view from this angle. Solid construction even if it is not swinging anymore.

Very interesting bridge indeed Tick - the overall design looks to be a combination of truss support on the horizontal and suspension cable on the vertical - Great Capture!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for this fine post (inclusive the link), Tick. I've checked-out the link and was somewhat confused. You call this bridge the Truss Swing Bridge while on the checked-out site it's called the St. Joseph Swing Bridge.
Saw on map that the Fairview Golf Course is pretty near St. Joseph Swing Bridge. Do me suppose that your capture was taken there, ☺ . The capture may be nothing special to you, but it's for me a very interesting and a good one (taking into account the poor weather conditions).
Good work Owd Fella!.

An amazing construction - and although abandoned it looks in reasonable repair.

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust

Well I think it's special, Tick. We're all spechul, aren't we? Me too. Even Bob knows I'm spechul (translates to daft). What people may not understand about this bridge is that "swing" means the span we're seeing here would swing 90 degrees on a pivot to allow boat traffic to pass through. If they follow that link you provided and scroll down a bit, they'll arrive at a photo taken of the bridge that crosses this view at 90 degrees... the section that would swing is turned and the river is open. Since it's abandoned I'm sure they swung the bridge open and left it like that to allow river traffic to be unimpeded. Here in North Dakota we have a pair of lift bridges, the Snowden Bridge across the Missouri River (in the linked photo you can see the massive concrete counter-weights in the towers and the operation shack on top in the middle... how's THAT for an office?) and the Fairview Bridge across the Yellowstone River that includes the only railroad tunnel in the state (it curves in the middle so it's pitch black inside for much of the 1,458-foot-long tunnel... it takes a bit of courage to go in there without a flashlight). You've recorded a cool piece of river history, Ron, that anyone not from there would never know of without your camera getting into the act. So thanks.

...Many of those types, even the ones still in service, are as old as the Hills...Amazing the technology required to build and operate them, with what they had to work with back then...

Nice one, Cap'n...Faved...
