I shot these at my grandfather's Christmas tree farm, just off the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia. I'm not sure what they are though, can anyone enlighten me?

Pretty sure that they belong to the genus or taxonomic group of ... plants.

(*nods ... flowerly*)

(*gets slappeed upside the head ... twice*)

Sorry, waaaaayyyy ... too much caffeine today. My inner imp is bouncing off of the walls.

Nice DOF. And you composed your image good (like the 'lines' within frame and all of that stuff).

Suggestion though, if I may ...

Given the delicacy of the flowers ... perhaps a less 'busy' background?

Kind of get lost in and amongst, being bold here.

That said and silliness aside, but of course ... thank you for sharing this one with us. :o)

I agree with the too busy background comment. Perhaps by taking a shot at right angle to them instead of from above, you could have given us a shot that was still good with DOF, and allowed us to better see the beauty and delicacy of the flowers.

But keep posting! This is how we learn.

Yes, I think a different angle would help and the focus seems to be off.

I have a fairly cheap point-and-shoot (it's the best I can afford), so I was happy to get the focus even this good. If anyone could tell me how to get it better, I would appreciate it.

You should still be able to get well-focussed images even with your P & S camera, Hannah.

A suggestion to improve things somewhat more, would be to use the self-timer option/functionality to take any inadvertent shake or movement from you ... out of the picture taking equation.

And/or ...

Find a sturdy resting spot for your camera, or improvise one ... and again, then make use of the self-timer stuff.

Delve into your camera's manual. Serious. If you've lost or misplaced it ... I am sure that google can be your friend in searching for one online.

Even P & S cameras have a functionality/option of locking your focus. Usually by depressing the shutter button half-way down ... recomposing the image you are about to take a photo of ... and finally depressing the shutter button.

Some additional food for thought ... "Tips for Using a Point & Shoot Camera" by Philip Greenspun.

/\ Check out the section on "Prefocus" for a better explanation of your camera's options in this regard.

Annnnnd ... done. :o)
