You are right about that. Maybe there is a primal need for good wood for home and hearth that this appeals to. I wasn't that impressed until I looked at it full screen, than wow!

the line of masking is a little too unsubtle ... any chance for a rework and a softening of that line?
This is a nice close-up of pretty wood grain. I like the little curled shavings of bark too. I am distracted by the unnatural line in the background. Perhaps you can do a closer crop sharpened somewhat rather than try to remove whatever you tried to remove. I'm not sure what would be best given that I don't know what the original looks like. Anyway, I think it's worth a save. I think you've used some nice lighting here too.
