Some time ago I posted my first version of this castle which was my second matte painting. It wasn't very good and I got a lot of useful comments from you folks. I've taken another course or two in digital matte painting and have been refining the image. And Yes this is my own work, the castle was designed by me with some elements designed and created by Luca Rodolfi (www.rodluc.com)a wonderful European artist. The photo reference pieces came from Caedes and from Dylan Cole (www.Mattepainting.org) I also bought some castle geometry from a fellow who goes by the name of Kaol. You can find him on turbosquid and renderosity. When I'm doing Matte painting and I need a 3D element, I try to find it somewhere rather than create it if it's complex because it's the painting I'm concentrating on. If I get into the geometry and texturing I often forget about my original painting mission...easily distracted Interestingly the mountains and trees come from three different continents and the awesome sky came from a photo by verenabloo. I hope you all like it. Please blow it up before commenting.

Wow! This is a stunning and convincing depiction - a wonderful amalgam of different sources. I would rate it very highly in the C-Index. My only suggestion for improvement is that the far cliff seems a bit cold and grey, not quite in keeping with the warm shafts of sunshine on the trees top right and bottom left. I'd therefore suggest adding a slight warming filter to the cliff. I shall look forward with great pleasure to seeing further examples of your digital matte painting.

I much appreciate all the comments I receive about my images, but please excuse me if I don't always reply. My interest in Caedes is exceeding my time available!

It looks good over all, nice composition. I'm guessing the terrain is from some program like Terrgen? The roof tiles seem a bit low-res, and you might want to detail them a little as well as rework the stonework of the castle a little to make it pop as the mortar seems a bit thick between the stones. In general the maps for the castle are too low-res, and the corners of the buildings are too clean and too straight. You also might want to do some gutter work on the lower roofs as well. Also on reexamining, I don't see any cloud shadows on the landscape, you might want to at least add the edge of one somewhere to increase the realism. The light used in the render also seems a bit too white, I'd add just a speck of yellow and rerender (as this appears to be a late afternoon shot), or adjust that in post otherwise.

I have to agree with Drakaran in general. I need to build higher rez stone maps. I recently got back from France where I took some nice stone wall shots that I can use. As for the mountain in the distance, I put in a mist gradient to push it back a bit which cools it off and I brightened up the foreground element to add to this illusion. Apparently it didn't work the way I intended.

Also, I foolishly decided to work on this painting in actual size of 1200x1600 which was a mistake. Real digital matte painters work in like 4K and then reduce down. As a result, I had to do an enormous amount of painting with the brush set at one pixel - very delicate work on my laptop without my Wacom tablet connected. But enough excuses. I had fun doing it and I'm working up my courage for the next one...maybe scifi.

I have a lot to learn.

Thanx for all the comments. I've taken Drakaran's advice and refined it quite a bit further with a lot of painted in detail and I added rain coming up behind the castle. This is all great fun for me. I'm working on other paintings as we speak. There's just sooooo much to learn and you have to develop an especially keen eye for perspective and color matching and especially shadows in order to nail it. Onward then.

Very cool rendering. I can tell alot of work went into this. The only thing I'm not sure about is that the top of the far left tower is cut off, but that's just me. Good work.

Hello Peter::first I want to thank you so much for using my cloud photo for your wonderful creation. It was a most lovely surprise and I'm only sorry I haven't gone thru your gallery sooner. I am just not online much nowadays, especially with nicer weather finally approaching us in Oregon. Your creation is magical and exhillerating. There is something so beautiful in castles, not only architecture, but textures and even softness.Your work is just awesome. The way the castle reaches up into the sky alone is magnificent.I would have liked to see the top of the tower on the left also touching deep into the heavens.I enjoy the way the sunlight is gently stroking over some of the trees, and the castle itself. Thank you again, my friend, not only for the clouds being here, but most importantly the way this whole scene brings out all sort of feeling within me. Verena

I like it. I noticed you used a lot more gray. I faved it. I would have never thought of putting a photo behind it. I'm so difficult I would have tried to draw every cloud.
Can I nit pick?
The light source seems a little out of sinc. Light source has always been a killer for me, so I know it when I see it.

Well Crazycrawson, is right. The light on the forground tree is coming from the wrong angle. I left it that way because I liked the way it looked, but if you have a good eye, it stands out. I'm thinking of relighting that portion. I'll play with it. Meanwhile, I posted another matte painting of an evening landing at a remote station of a distant planet.
