For those of you with short memories this is What It Is was. Not all of it only the small bit off center to the bottom left. That is to say the fungal bit clinging to the side. At one point in time that was a perfectly good white spruce tree. Then Burl moved in and things went downhill after that. Now all that is left is a 5 ft tall rotting stump of its former glory.

Enjoy and your comments welcomed.

The reason why the sun sets in the evening is because it wants to see the sunrise in the morning. I rise in the morning because I want to see them both. RvdB

It looks a lot like a face, with that elongated shape above the fungal growth looking like the nose and the growth looking like lips. Something like this could be another contest theme, as in "Hidden image"... a hidden image or shape within the photo. Back in 2010 I submitted a photo of the north fork of the Flathead River, along the northwest edge of Glacier National Park, titled "Medusa On the Flathead." If you look to the right at the roots of an overturned pine, you can see what looks like (to my twisted brain, anyway) Medusa's head. Nice image, by the way. I voted for ya.

Interesting narrative my Friend. The burl is generally much harder than the wood and can, if not rotten, be quite valuable particularly to carvers and furniture makers. Cool shot.

I love it Wendell! It's so unique and beautiful, even if it is an oddity of nature. My husband would love to have that! He has a large slice from the center of a burl that has been treated and it is GORGEOUS! It was handed down to him from his Grandfather. A very nice find and great shot of it my friend!!
