I came across this ship motor a few years back so I figured it was time to share:) It is abut 3' in diameter. Thanks for your comments.

Bruce, it's an electric motor. Probably used in one of the many auxiliary machines a ship possesses.
I'm surprised it was found in that condition. As a rule, these electric motors are dismantled by buyers after their active life because of the expensive copper.

That's an old one!...Sea is right...One of my relatives owned a salvage yard and they would always buy old, outdated motors for the copper windings, which merited a good price...
