I know nothing of botany. I saw these at a greenhouse display in San Francisco. Why would a flower be adorned with the image of an insect at its center? Evolutionary pressure to prevent something from eating it? Or perhaps a warning to keep certain insects away by claiming it is already occupied? Or is it pure chance? Maybe you know.

They appear to be pansy orchids - the black area comparing to the "face" on a pansy. The botanical name is miltoniopsis. This is lovely.
