The Clutha River is the second longest river in New Zealand flowing south-southeast 338 kilometres (210 mi) through Central and South Otago from Lake Wanaka in the Southern Alps to the Pacific Ocean. It is notoriously fast-flowing, and it is often listed as one of the world's most swiftly flowing rivers, alongside Australia's Macleay and Fitzroy Rivers, the Amazon and Atrato Rivers in South America. The waters of the Upper Clutha are clear turquoise, the result of glacial and snow-melt filtering when the water flows through Lake Wanaka. This is a rare characteristic for a high volume river. (Wikipedia)
"Clutha" derives from from "Cluaidh", Scots Gaelic for "Clyde"
The Maori name for the Clutha was Mata-au, meaning “surface current'.

This is gently flowing stretch close to Wanaka where I enjoyed a pleasant walk along its banks. The poplars are just beginning their autumn show of gold and this one appears to be taking a drink from the river. . . . Taken with Panasonic DMC FZ28. Thanks for viewing. All comments most appreciated.

Lots of interesting information about this large and beautiful river, Lyn. I still can't get my head around the idea that for you it is approaching Autumn and we are anxious for the return of the flowers and the butterflies here. Such a lovely blue the river is too. I have not seen a river so blue anywhere else. The lovely yellow boughs bending for a drink add an applealing color complement to this wonderful scene.

Beautiful river and photo. As usual, great all the way. I liked the lighting very much. Your contrast and sharpness settings had made this photo like a painting.
