I put this in the Still Life Gallery because the lives of the women who treasured these engagement rings are now stilled, but the life they gave lives on.
The one on the left belonged to my mother-in-law and the other one was her mothers (it is well over 100 years old).
It was much more difficult to photograph them than I expected. I tried many different backgrounds, settings, and light and approx 100 efforts went in the bin ! Taken with Canon 450D, 60mm macro lens. This was not the clearest result but it is the one I like best.
Comments most welcome.

I can visualize the lighting being difficult!...However, I did some a few months back and found dark card background worked best!..

Saying that...this is damn good though..photo'ed purfick!

Hmmm - I tried a dark background, and a green one, and a red one, and a multi-coloured one. Actually the multi colour looked really nice, but the stones reflected too many colours and almost disappeared. I don't suppose the fact that I don't really know how to focus properly could have anything to do with it . . . . .LOL

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust

I too had the idea of photographing an earring for the contest but gave it up. Very sharp focus on the front of the rings which is what counts Lyn.

Lyn - A family history captured here - diamonds, and the light they refract, make them a challenge to photograph. I think you did a fine job here. Thad

You still did a good job, Eve. If you can find some remnants in a fabric shop, deep burgundy, midnight blue and black velvet generally work very well and relect little light if any.
Re focusing, always keep in mind that depth of field (acceptable sharpness) always extends 1/3rd to the front and 2/3rd's to the rear of the point focused upon.
Also, most DSLR's have a button on the front of the camera that closes down the lens to the aperture you're using and gives you a preview of the depth of field.
Check you camera manual as settings vary between manufacturers.

Well done Lyn - I agree with Doug about the fabric - for photographing antiques I like to use either a mossy green or steel blue matte fabric like velvet or velour. This is really lovely and somewhat poignant.

A beautiful and moving image Lyn and I know how important rings such as these are. Mrs b has passed her mother and grandmother's rings to her nieces as we don't have children.

Gorgeous capture / presentation of the family rings. Love the bit of lighting on the diamonds. I enjoyed the reading the history behind these family keepsakes. Excellent capture, Lyn & best wishes in the contest.
