A New Zealand Fur Seal (Arctocephalus forsteri) basking on the rocks.
NZ Fur seals are now a protected species both here and in Australia.
They were a source of food and clothing to the early Polynesions but were then driven almost to extinction when European sealers arrived in the 19th century. They can be quite agressive if annoyed but I was able to quietly get quite close to this one.
Kekeno is their Maori name.
I have put him in the BWC. Thank you for looking :)

This seal is so cute!! Wonderful capture of it looking directly at you. I like the tight crop.

We have a lot of "kekenos" along the North Sea coast and they are under protection too. Even the sick ones are brought in and nursed back to health and taken back. Good close-up shot.

From that smile I'm guessing he likes your brand of camera. There's been a number of seal images here at Caedes, but none that are this close in, clearly illustrating the nature of the animal. If my granddaughter saw that face she'd likely give him a kiss, thinking him warm, happy, and cuddly. A sure winner for this really tough, tough contest. :)

Happy Trails

I remember the brutal Seal culls in my patch of the world back in the day, it occurred shortly after the pups were born! I don't know if it still goes on.
A good portrait of this sensitive creature Lyn.
