Harekeke is the plant in the foreground (NZ Flax, Phormium tenax) It thrives in coastal areas and can reach 3 metres in height.
Maori Proverb:
'Tungia te ururua, kia tupu whakaritorito te tupu o te harakeke.
Set fire to the scrub that the flax plants may shoot forth young evergreen shoots.
Meaning: Clear off the old and bad that the new and good may grow vigorously.' (Colenso 1880)

People are like cameras--sometimes they lose focus.
That's sort of like the pine cones in our mountain forests; people dread forest fires but it's nature's way of using high heat to activate the seeds in the cones to get new trees to grow. Otherwise the forest gets filled with dead brush and branches and no new trees will sprout. The Maori know of what the speak.
