We have had some ferociously high seas causing these NZ Fur Seals (Kekeno) to come ashore for a rest. This was not all of them, there are 25 or more in the photo taken today but we counted about 40. They know they are safe because it is near the penguin colony which is protected. They live for about 15 years and the males grow as big as 2.5m long. They have been recorded diving deeper than 238m and for as long as 11 minutes!
Lyn, unbelievable when one realizes the pressure they have to withstand at that depth.
Also incredible is that they can stay underwater for 11 minutes.
If a human diver were to do this, it would take a multiple of time to resurface. If not, he or she will not survive because of the so-called caisson disease.
Interesting and impressive phoptograph!
