Pair of Florida Panthers at Jax Zoo. Would love suggestions on correcting exposure, especially as some areas are blown out. I only have Picknik photo editing software and wasn't able to figure out what to do on this photo. If anyone wants to do any editing on this - feel free!

First what a beautiful looking capture of two beautiful looking creatures, the composition is spot on and the colours are very nice too.I was getting this problem with the light as it is bright it takes away some of the colour, what i do now is i look through the view finder and then adjust the EV button up or down in this shot it would be down. But still love this shot.Plus nice framing too.PS you could try brightness and contrast if you have this on your software. Here a free program that is very good http://picasa.google.com/

Roger gave you some good good advice, re: Exposure Compensation.

Here is some more information on that subject for future reference:

"Understanding... Exposure Compensation"

And here is another image editing program/software ... that is freeware:

"PhotoFiltre 6.5.1"

Homepage and tutorials (upper left-hand menus) can be found here:

"PhotoFiltre"

Depending on the amount of photographic data (if you shot in RAW, more will be salvageable) ... some overexposed images/photos can be rescued, let's say.

To be honest, and in viewing your photo as is and as presented ... not sure how much can be done. Other than that of maybe a more stylized presentation. High key, for example.

That said..

Nicely composed.

And I happen to have a soft spot for the big cats.

If this zoo is readily accessible to you, a suggestion then.. go back and re-shoot forearmed with the above knowledge and tips.

And on that note, again for future reference ... add in the make and model of your camera in your accompanying narratives. Might provide a leaping off point for more tips, advice, et al.

Got my fingers crossed that you might be able to revisit these two and grace us with another photo.

Ok, my creative curiosity got the better of me ... thought I would try my hand at turning your image/photo here into that of a High Key. (Hope you don't mind.)

Here is the result of a quick trip into Photoshop CS3 (<-- in my case): "Panther Pair - High Key"

Lots of tutorials out there, for other image editing software/programs as well. For instance;

"Create a high key image in Photofiltre".

Go ahead, give it a try..

:o)

p.s. The tutorials, that is. The above 'let me google that for you' was for giggles. Well, kind of. ;o)

Wow... amazing how changing the exposure of the picture seems to convey something completely different? I mean - the relationship of the 2 animals remains the same, but the overall feeling to me is like it's an old phto or that it reduces all the elements in the picture to their simplest forms - what I'm trying to say is I AM impressed by that! I'm still struggling just to learn to take stand out photos, don't know when I'll be at the stage to start seriously altering them. I have played around with some effects before for fun - but never attempted redoing a regular photo. Never say never, right? I so appreciate your interest in helping me improve this shot and I'm saving your hints and info. to try out soon!
