In The Australian Alps. The angular beauty of mineral and stone. The ever shifting mystery of clouds across vast blue skies. The myth evoking journey of water from heaven to sea, across a dry landscape rich with beauty and possibility. This is where I live, in a landscape raw and harsh, worn down over millennia. Sustaining the oldest living civilisation on the planet and the most stable and progressive democracy on the planet. Most Australians live in cities, as do I. Most Australians love our myths and legends from the Outback, are content to own an identity drawn from those myths without ever being truly at home in that ancient and terrifying space. I go out here alone. I listen. Maybe, one day, I will hear what my Indigenous Brothers and Sisters hear. Or at least a faint, faint echo of that truth. Peace, Mikel.
