For those of you who wanted to see some more of the Amsterdam Sail event I give you the Amerigo Vespucci. Vespucci was the one person for whom North and South America was named after. Vespucci was a famous Italian sailor and cartographer. He had a wonderful life and found many things on his voyages. Amerigo Vespucci was born in Florence, Italy in March of 1451. Amerigo Vespucci is a 3 mast full rigged sailing tallship. Built 1930-31, Royal Shipyard (formerly), Castellamare di Stabia. and carried out many voyages before World War II. The period of the war was the only time the ship has not been active. The elegant, three-mated full rigger serves as the training vessel of the Italian Naval Academy.

A very impressive image of one of the most beautiful tall-ships afloat. Certainly one of my favorite ships.

What kind of foolish world do I live in that immediately upon seeing this ship, I think (in pirate accent of course), "Yaargh maties, get me parrot and we be settin' fyre to this town tonite... yo ho ho and a bottle of rum... Where's de serving wench?!" ??

No matter my silly brain. The ship is most impressive, and I like that you put it off to one side a little in order to include the event and a taste of the day. Nice capture, great color and very clear. I especially enjoyed reading your description and I hope that no pirates were harmed during this photo shoot ;)

An excellent shot. I've actually been aboard this vessel when it docked in Leith docks. I must have been about 8 years old. My dad still talks about the ship. Thanks for this post. I'll treasure this one.

do you realize how close we came to a national identity disaster with this name- Amerigo Vespucci? what if his LAST name was used in the naming of the new land? we'd be singing 'God Bless Vespucciland' and Bert Parks would be singing 'There she is, Miss Vespucciland' It was awfully close folks!
