The Great Crested Grebe and some smaller ones. This mother bird carries her young on her back most of the day, while father goes off and on with newly catched fish. You can sit and whatch them for hours. I shot this at 300 mm with a Canon EF 70-300 mm zoom lens and of course a tripod. I had my camera completely set in manual mode and manual focus at ISO200/f8/1/200s but I still made one mistake: I left the image stabilizer on (mode 2). And as a result, the image is not as sharp as I had hoped for. So, my tip of the day for all of you colleges: if you use a tripod, the stabilizer should be OFF!

For a zoom it is pretty sharp. Doesn't mode 2 work when you engage the shutter? A very nice photo. Many of us would like such an out of focus opportunity and get your results. It may not look perfect but I think some feathers look out of focus even when you have a good focus.

Nature is so interesting and thanks for info on this amazing bird. Better luck next time on the image stabilizer but as far as I'm concerned it deserves a 10/10.

That’s a fabulous shot. These Grebes live here in Australia too but I haven’t seen the young ones hitching a ride for myself yet. If I see this in the voting booth it gets a 10.

I hold it true that thoughts are things; They're endowed with bodies, breath and wings: And that we send them forth to fill the world with good results, or ill. That which we call our secret thought speeds forth to earth's remotest spot, leaving it's blessings or it's woes like tracks behind it as it goes. We build our future, thought by thought for good or for ill, yet know it not. Yet so the universe was wrought . Thought is another name for fate. Choose then thy destiny and wait, for Love brings Love and Hate brings Hate. - Henry Van Dyke.

It's still an absolutely beautiful shot! The colors alone are so rich and the birds are really splendid! Nice work, Paul! I'll try to remember your tip when I ever get a lens with IS!

You will be led to the knowledge of the internal things which are invisible to you, by the external things which you see before you. . . . Even so then, we can represent to ourselves in thought the Author of all that is, by contemplating and admiring the (visible) things which He has made, and ever brings into being. - Hermes

You are right Paul about turning off the stabilizer if using a tripod. There are so many things to remember to get the perfect shot. I have told myself and have yet to do it, put all the "to do" things on an index card and keep it as a checklist and keep it in your camera bag. That's MY tip. What a capture! I mean, WHAT A CAPTURE! It's a keeper.
