Looks like it fell from the cliff at some point. The sand is because much of the area is sandstone that eventually wears away. At Pogue Creek Canyon in Tennessee.

Has the resemblance of an contemporary piece of art, but taking into account its age, think I can better speak of 'historical natural art', Jeff.

It has beautiful soft colours - and as Cornelius said it does resemble art.
I guess art tries to mimic nature as well sometimes.
